Baiting


Crazy me. I've never seen a fisher. It kind-of looks like a gray fox in the photo, (only different color) then again it doesn't.

Are they protected?

Nice photo catch dannyk. That is a rare treat. David, we have Pine Marten on the coast in VA I believe. A buddy of mine asked me about them when he saw one there and didn't know what it was. I showed him a picture of one after he described it and he said that was what he saw. Those Fisher pelts must fetch a good price if there is only a 1 per limit and 15 day season.

Great picture dannyk. I've never seen one in the wild either. I think they reintroduced them into the U.P. about twenty years ago over on the west side in the Sylvania Tract. Keep your trail cams working that Cougar isn't all that far from you.
 
I believe I may have seen one last year actually. I had no idea what it was I saw at the time until I read this post and saw the picture. I only got a glimpse of it and the property owner was standing only a few yards away from my but was looking in a different direction and he didn't see it. I told him it resembled a cat but was much bigger and it was fast! we kind of shrugged it off at the time that it probably was a cat but now I think it may have been a Fisher... I will never know for sure.
 
Went calling this morning, no luck, here's the set up. The caller and decoy are right along side of the log, there is a large finger off to the left with a marsh also at the head of it. I'm set up on a small rock out croping hidden from anything coming out of the finger area until it gets within 25 yards of the caller.

Danny, the Driveway Patrol is a good one, and affordable.

I purchased another one and it works on the same frequency as my old one. I plan to get yet one more in hopes of covering the area well.
 
Do these units perform reasonably well without the modifications you guys have discussed in the past? I don't have a real problem with making modifications if it is necessary to bring the unit up to acceptable performance levels. I guess it all boils down to what you are trying to accomplish.

The last Driveway Patrol I purchased works well without the modification at my 60 yard bait site. DoubleUp might join in with some more information since he is the modification specialist. I think he added the antenna in order to reach out a bit further since the unit was limited in it's reach. But at 60 yards, mine works fine.

I spray painted mine to camo it a bit, no other modifications to it, and mounted it on a stake near the bait site.

Yesterday I ordered yet another one for $15.99 postpaid (Ebay). I phoned the company first to see that it works on the same frequency as my other two, 434 MHz. It does. I plan to place these sensors around the site in hopes of covering the area well. All three transmitters will operate with the one receiver.

Some times small animals go undetected, such as possums. A possum will generally trip the alarm, but it may be at the site for a while before it does. I want to be alerted of anything that moves. I have never had a coyote get by it, however.


 
So far at home mine is working great, the rain will finally stop sometime tonight or tomorrow morning then it looks like a dry three days. I picked up a small road killed button buck yesterday and have it on a bait pile, will put the sensor to use and sit in the blind to see if anything shows.
 
I have been searching for a couple hours and can't find the details on the modification to the driveway patrol.

are you just disconnecting the speaker and connecting the speaker wiring to a jack to plug the headphones into?

how are you connecting the external antenna to the transmitter to increase the range?

Yes, just clip the speaker wire inside the unit, drill a small hole and run a lead out with a 3.5 mm female plug. That will allow you to attached ear buds or headset.

Note: you will need a volume control for a headset. The volume that comes from the Driveway Patrol receiver is piercing and will just about wake the dead. I found an in-line volume control on Ebay that works great. Here's the page where I posted photos of the volume control (page 68). If you are interested, I'll try to find it and give you a link.

Believe me, this system works good, much better than the other three alerts I purchased earlier, some costing several times more than the Driveway Patrol. As with all man-made things, nothing is perfect and sometimes I have a possum wondering about that doesn't trip the alarm. That is why I have purchased two extra units in hopes of covering the area better.

I use a single earbud while sleeping. You can bet that if the alarm goes off at night, something is on the bait. Sometimes you will get false alarms during the daytime, however, but not at night.
