Baiting

Female dog down 2 nights ago while coming in to check out the bait area. 8pm, 70 yards, 50grVMAX for the win. The more I watch and learn from my bait area the more I'm convinced that the yotes arent too interested in the bait, but more so the critters that visit it like coons and possums. Again, the critters were my early warning system when they scattered and climbed trees before the yote came in. Picked up another yote on the trail cams last night so I guess I'll be out again tonight. Thanks to all who have helped me learn from this forum.

ETA - this is the 5th yote down since I got my ATN 4k Pro digital NV scope. Use a FLIR scout as a spotter and the combo gets the job done for me anyway.

Burn, have you shot any video with the 4k? Would love to see some of your kills and how the scope is performing at night. Congrats on another one.

Nice going Burn. Same here, I would like to see some video of your kills with the 4k. My 3-14 model is pretty good, but seems it's too white / bright looking at night and not so much contrast. The video I took seems to look better than what my eye could see, or at least so far that's my thoughts.

Thanks guys. I've never used the recoil activated video function on the 4K but will give it a try and see if I can get it to work.

Might get a Pulsar thermal next year but the digital ATN seems to work great for me. I get a little tired of having to use IR light but other than that it works fine.

I played around some more tonight in my yard with the 4k. Distances varried from 40 to maybe 60 or 70 yards. It looked pretty darn good with the TR-38. Maybe my sleepy eyes last night were to blame. I also got the Apex XQ-38 thermal out. It is a good scope for the money.

I noticed two things about the new 4k. First, the whiteout was not near as bad as with the X-Sight 2 or the Photon XT, and second I noticed that the audio is muted when zooming. The audio is good otherwise.

I was hunting another state today and had the gun with the X-Sight II with me. For the most part, my wife and I have our own stuff but we only have one scanner and one NV setup. This coyote set the alarm off about 15 minutes after dark but my wife could only watch. I got home about 11PM, too late for us to shoot. This coyote came back about 12:30 AM when he was safe. He will get hungry tomorrow, hopefully early. It's my wife's turn to shoot. She will have a more steady rest hopefully.

Nice going, Burn. Sorry about video.

On my old X-Sight 2 the recoil activated video never did work with my 6x45, probably due to low recoil out of the AR. Also, I found that if you have the RAV turned on, the manual record would not work either. I lost a couple of good video shots because of it. I then turned the RAV off in the menu setting and only used the manual record button on top. That worked every time. I have RAV turned off on my new 4k and just record manually. Don't want to chance losing a good video. You might want to experiment a little to see what works for you before the next hunt.

Nice Burnsome, On my X-sight II I have RAV turned off. Just hit the right arrow one time and the video starts. Hit it again it stops. You must have RAV turned off for it to work.

Will try that seting on the scope. Just burned another yote tonight 5 minutes after setting up, but in the heat of the moment I forgot to hit the button as you suggested so no video this time. I'll post pics tomorrow though after daylight. Got a male this time. Thats 5 females and 2 males since I got NV about 5 or 6 months ago. Seems to be a game changer and the bait technique is working quite well. The pace is picking up quite a bit. When I started this, my main goal was/is to eradicate the area around my property, but I had no idea there were that many around. Maybe the baiting is drawing more into the area or maybe they were all here and I'm just now seeing that? Either way I'm going to keep after them.

Burn - Nice going on the ugly coyote. Dead is beautiful.

So, I had a second coyote visit. The first was back on February 19 and this one came in to the bait pile on Dec. 19 - 10 months later. Glad I like to hunt other predators. So here it is:

It seems huge, but then I been looking at fox a long time.

Gobg, that's great. Just a matter of time now. Breathe deep, hold steady, aim small, miss small.

Burn, you're in the meat for sure. The supply will run out though and have to be refreshed at some point. I got 16 from Sept. to Dec. the first year before I whittled them down.

I'll keep checking the trail cams daily until another one shows up. Going to order 2 or 3 more cameras after Christmas for better coverage around the bait area.

Everytime I think I have them knocked back a notch more show up.

You're definitely in a coyote rich environment, and will always have them replenishing. Sometimes after you've knocked down the originals, it may even take a few months. I've had good years since then, and some not so good, but they always show up again. I usually get a run in the spring it seems. Maybe it's the mating season and they're hunting for a mate, or perhaps just pups dispersing from their parents to find their own territory. In any event, they always come back that's the good part when you have habitat they prefer.
