Baiting

Excellent job dog driller!!! Maybe some pics?? They are definitely there...Stay after it, and it will happen!! That is what keeps us coming back!! Quite honestly, baiting occupies my whole winter, everyday, baitsites, alarms, binoculars...and poof, the winter is gone! Good stuff!!!

Go get 'em dog driller! Pics, please!

Every so often there is that one shot you wished you could redo.

Crawled up in the stand last evening at 5:50 and by 8:00 I was ready to close up shop when I heard a fox coming in to the pile. I waited for him to present me with a good shot. I fired, fox went down for the count, and I thought game over! Not so much. Two seconds later the fox jumped up and
bolted for parts unknown. I was unable to get a follow up shot off. He left a fairly good blood trail that later thinned to marginal. I tracked him for an hour before calling it a night due to lateness and a dying flashlight battery.

Today I resumed the search following the blood trail that eventually petered out to nothing. I canvassed the stream bottom in the direction he was last headed, checking every log and hollow stump. About 75 yards from the last spot of blood, I came across some bloodied leaves at the entrance of a root ball. Apparently the fox, at some point, took refuge beneath the tree's massive root system. I don't know whether he crawled down inside and died or if he moved out at a later time. I'm just sorry I didn't get to finish the job. Humbling to say the least.
Video of the shot:

Yep gg...for sure!!! I did the same thing on a red fox last year. Just vanished...into thin air!! I followed the blood trail to where it dried up. I looked for the next three days grid searching the entire area...no joy. Makes for a long few days...then press on. Kudos on the search for sure!!! Lots of folks would not put in the effort!!!!

Good job finding him, Gobbler. As Baitpile mentioned, a lot of people would have given up the search. Glad you found him.

Looks like the X-Sight is working well for you.

Question Gobbler, was the video in recoil activated mode or did you have to manually do a record?

GG, video is pretty good. Not much IR reflection off the trees and branches and not much Whiteout at the shot. Were you able to slow the video down to tell where you actually hit him? I know the feeling about losing one like that. I shot a solid black coyote in 2011 that was beautiful and he got away from me. I looked for him for two days, but it just wasn't to be.

6mm - yes, I did have the RAV feature turned on. It has worked really well, so far. Set it and forget it. Just to clarify, unfortunately I was not able to collect the Red dog. My guess is he is still way, way up under that root ball, dead by now. If he survived the shot based on the amount of blood, it would be a miracle.
DU - the cross hair or red dot, was placed on his chest more towards his right side than centered. I believe the bullet may have hit high on his right leg. My guess is the bullet is dropping low again, so I am going to target check it this weekend.

Gosh, that dog has been around that site all winter with me. We had quite the cat -n-mouse game going all season. Feel awful it ended the way it did....I think wounding an animal you can't recover is by far the hardest part of hunting, you have to swallow. Hughhhh.

I have a deer carcass in the field behind my house that was a road kill. I've seen signs over the past couple of days that a coyote had hit the deer. Tonight I caught her out there around 9. The video tells the rest.

Sorry Gobbler, I thought you recovered him. My mistake, but at least you gave it 110% effort. Looks like the RAV feature gave you plenty of footage before and after the shot. Do you set the length of time manually or does it do it automatically?

DoubleUp, you and that thermal scope are one. That's some mighty fine shooting at that distance and from such a small magnification. You have been doing it over and over which proves the lesser magnification isn't necessarily a bad thing. Nice going.

6mm -you can set the seconds to record before and after the shot. Anytime you want to change it you can go back into the menu and do so.

DU - excellent shooting! Congratulations!
Thanks for sharing the video.

Gobbler, I finally decided to give the X-Sight 2 a try. I ordered the 3-14x model like you have, got it through Amazon for a very good price. Time will tell if I like it or not. If it doesn't suit my needs, I have 30 days to return it. I am also anxious to read reviews of the new K4 model and the Photon RT, but that may take some time for serious hunting reviews to become available. Thanks for all the information you gave me about the scope, and I really enjoyed our phone conversation the other evening.

YEAAA! Glad to hear 6,you're gonna give the x-sight a whirl. I hope you find it suitable and it meets your hunting needs. I certainly have been pleased with the scope. Don't know if you got my PM or not, but I videoed the yardage and zoom variations with the scope tonight. Would you still want to see that video? No problem, if not.

Gobbler, no, I didn't get your message. I will still be interested in seeing your video if you want to post it. If it's a hassell then don't go to the trouble. My way of thinking is that everyone can benefit from seeing reviews, the more the better.

I am anxious to put the scope to use and see how it goes. My first impression in Cabela's a few days ago was very good. I like the concept of a color daytime scope with quick change to night vision with the press of a button. That would satisfy my Georgia hog hunting requirements, as well as calling for coyotes. That feature would eliminate what I did last time of packing one scope with quick detach rings in a backpack and the other mounted on the rifle with intensions of switching out in the field as darkness fell. Having one scope that can do both is appealing so just hoping it works well. Besides the positives, there seems to be negatives with the scope too and that is why I have been reluctant to purchase. Some people have had very good success while others don't. I'm sure there is a learning curve with the scope to get the most from it. If it doesn't suit my needs, at least I can return it within 30 days. That hopefully will satisfy my own personal desire to check the scope out. I plan to mount it on my Dtech AR 6x45.

Sounds like the x-sight should serve the 2 scopes in one deal, just depends on how you like the clarity and the gobs of other features it touts. I probably won't use half of them, like the wifi, range finder and others, but oh well. Wanted to ask, did you get an external battery with it? I think we talked about the necessity of one.
I will probably get the scope distance and magnification video uploaded on Monday and post to this site.
One thing I forgot to mention about the scope is the focus knob on the unit. It is very tight to adjust and have heard others comment on that as well. There is some kind of after market adapter you can get that supposedly makes it easier to turn. I don't often mess with the focus because I repeatedly shoot at the same distances, but who knows - now with NV, that could change!
Will be anxious to hear your review of the scope. And hey, if you write a review of the scope and post it, like on Amazon,ATN will send you a free ATN cap or t-shirt ( your choice). Got my cap in the mail today! Kinda nice.

I ordered a cheaper battery last night from Ebay, and a cable to connect it to the scope. Not sure how long this battery might last, but it was cheap so if it doesn't last long then I won't be out much money. I saw it on YouTube where a guy was using it but he didn't say how long it will power the scope. There are more powerful batteries available and with a higher price tag but will give this one a try first. If it will power the scope for a few hours then I will purchase a backup battery or two and hopefully would be able to hunt for a reasonable amount of time.

Also, there is a focus knob available on Ebay that should make turning it much easier. I haven't ordered it yet but plan to.

Thanks for the info about the cap.

Good evening gentlemen. Had a good night tonight on the bait. Its been snowing here today, so got a nice snow cover back and put the coyotes on the move...to my bait anyway. Had a pair come in tonight. Fun to watch multiples at your bait site. I got the female and the male left at mach 2 and never returned to check on things. Number 9 this year, not counting a miss and a splash that I never found. so its been a banner year for us this year!!!

David looking forward to hear what you think about the X-Sight.

Baitpile and DU nice shooting, I wish I could get a coyote in, only one all year. I been giving fox a pass, but only a week or so left the pass has been rescinded.

I have been stacking up the opossums I seem to be over run, I shot 2 and had them and 3 live ones in my pictures at one time on the bait last night.

Got these pics the other day, believe it's a Northern or Crested Caracara not native to New York by any means.

Nice pictures P. I've been through those lean times too, and it gets tough to keep on working at it, but eventually it will pay off. Right now is a good time to get some fresh coyotes into your area as mating is moving into high gear and younger ones from last year are being driven off to make it on their own. They will be roaming looking for territory to establish as their own.

Owen I have 2 piles going one about 125 yards and the other about 75 both just outside my dogs invisible fence. I had to pull the back camera yesterday to change batteries. This morning I had several fresh coyote tracks at that site, so maybe things are changing, it would only be the second coyote of the year.

Usually I have my hands on a road kill or 2 by now but haven't stumbled onto one so whatever comes in doesn't stay long. I've used butcher scraps in the past without any luck, what's everyone using, I've always relied on deer carcasses and road kill?
