A Mike Eddy Special

A few weeks ago, Mike said he was expecting me to make one of those famous running shots (In his mind). So, Mike this one is dedicated to you. I have been shooting my 22-250 bolt action, but I had a failure to fire last night that cost me a coyote. That happened once last spring, and opportunities are too rare to have a rifle messing up. I discovered that the culprit was a bad primer, and not the rifle this time. But I decided to break the bolt down and give it a thorough cleaning so I switched the scope over to my old trusty AR (223).

In the video, two groups of coyotes responded vocally. One farther group at my 10 o'clock and a closer group at my 12 o'clock. I had unpicked soybeans immediately to my 3 o'clock and a harvested cornfield with high stalks to my 9. My call was 60 yds. to my 9 on a field road that I came in on. Wind was light from my 8 to my 2. I had opened with a little Cagie Cottontail which has been working well, but got no response. So, I went to Submissive Beggar, but still nothing. I played one series of C'mere Lonely Howls and they opened up.

I didn't play anymore sounds. I thought the 12 o'clock group was close enough to send a scout to investigate. Sure enough, as you will see in the video it only takes a couple of minutes and a big male comes sneaking in from a field road out of the soybeans. Here I make a tactical mistake by switching from 3x to 6x in the main screen. The coyote is actually about 65 yds. from me when I shoot, but looks like he is right on top of me. It is a good hit, but doesn't stop him instantly. He turns to run, and with the AR follow-ups are just so easy. So I give him a Mike Eddy running shot and pile him up. I haven't taken any running shots in a while and it felt good to see that coyote do somersaults. Anyway Mike, this one is dedicated to you. I hope you enjoy it.

ENJOY IT I DID! Reminds me of your past videos my friend. BUMMER about bad primer(s)-would make my OCD flare up big time and want to not trust any of them.

It was a CCI 200, and the first one I've ever had fail out of thousands. I even pulled the bullet and checked to be sure I hadn't accidentally left the power out when charging the case. Nope, full load of powder. I think the priming compound somehow got left out of the primer. Anyway, it worked out and Mike, you got your running shot. It really is pretty when they roll up like that on a dead run.

Thanks guys! The AR has really spoiled me over the past 4 years, and I've been struggling with the bolt-action remembering to work the bolt, and do it with authority. I will go back to the 250 at some point, probably after I miss one with the AR, or I may even dust off the 243 again.
