358 Winchester

OH GAWD YES! It will be plenty for either. My hunting partner has a BLR in .358 Win and that is about as good NA game rifle as I have ever seen.

I have a model Seven Remington with a 21" Hart barrel chambered for 358 Win. I love the rifle, I have killed a coyote and one whitetail with it. I load my own ammo, 200 grain Barnes TSX, but once I use up what I have I am going to try the new Buffalo Bore 225 grain TSX @ 2500 fps. I can't even come close to that with my handloads, so as long as they are accurate, I'll stick with them. The 358 can be loaded with 180 grain bullets at around 2800 fps, which is pretty much identical to the 30-06(barring BC).
The buck I killed was 189 lbs dressed, and at 197 yards I punched through him twice with the 200 grain TSX, so I would say the 358 has plenty of power still at that range. 3" high at 100, dead on at 200 and 10" low at 300. It works out in my scope so I can hold on the point where the reticle changes from wide to thin above the crosshair at 100(for +3"), hold dead on at 200, and then just a hair below the reticle changeover below the crosshair at 300. I use the Bulletflight program for farther than 300 but I doubt I'd actually shoot at an animal past the 300 yard mark.

I would be surprised if you got 2500fps out of a 21" tube. Really surprised. Either way, it really doesn't matter, though. Handloads will easily get you to 2350fps, and performance will differ little to none at ranges the 358 is capable of. And it won't cost you $50/box. JMO.

The 358 is a nice little cartridge. Although I do like my 35 Whelen, 356, and 348 better, the 358 is probably capable of better accuracy than the latter 2 said cartridges. I'd not hesitate for one minute to shoot at elk or buffalo with a 358 Win. I still prefer 250gr bullets, although a 225gr TSX can't be a bad thing........

My buddies BLR will push 180 g. SP @ 2500. It is the most accurate lever action I have ever seen!

This was a BLR Carbine @ 100 with a Burris 1-4x.

I had one 40 years ago in 99 Savage......the rifle wasn't very accurate but the little cartridge was very effective for it's size. At that time, I was loading 250 gr Norma bullet that had a different silver color to the jacket.....it killed well and I took a few moose and a grizzly with it.

I have a .358 in a Remington 78 bolt action. It is a great cartridge and I have taken several whitetails with it; it punches a nice hole thru and thru with a short profuse blood trail if they go anywhere. I use the Speer 220g flatpoints over W748. TTT

Biggest I would use is a .35 Rem. for a big bear or something....

But other than that, not for anything on this continent.....

I also have a .358 in a Browning BLR. With it I have taken a couple of medium to big whitetails and am very happy with its performance. As I have a .350 RM and a .35 Whelen, I haven't shot any bullet larger than 200 grains from it. With a 200 grain bullet I wouldn't hesitate to take elk with it a modest ranges, for buffalo my preference would be for something with a bit more horsepower.
