Am I the only one having a love affair w/this cartridge? Used a Savage 99CD for several years and as soon as I saw they were chambering the Model 12 for it I jumped on one. So fast I'm still thinking its brand new, well sort of?? Anyway am currently using 85 gr. Nosler BT's and an appropriate amount of RL15 w/CCI BR-2 primers for .6" groups on demand @ 100yds. Also 100gr. Speer "Hot-Core" or Nosler Partitions w/RL-19 @ around 1" consistently @ 100yds. Am trying 8208 XBR w/ the 85 gr. bullets. I'm seeing about 100fps. more velocity but the groups so far are around .75 to 1 inch. Great fun though and a nostalgia trip for sure.

I just put together a Stevens 200 in 250-3000 20" A&B barrel Bushnell 4200 Elite 1.25x4x24mm Ill. Dot for calling out here on the Penninsula 117gr RN's over H-4895 for big cats and bear and 75gr "X" bullets over R-15 for little cats and coyotes.

I also have a 99 Take down with A Pachmayer LOow Swing mount and a Weaver K-3, 87gr Hotcores over H-4895. And a Savage Model 20 using the same loads as the 99.

Nice! Mine(the 99) has been used on coyotes, wolves(that's my job), deer and a couple of elk. May not be "the elk" cartridge but it worked well w/careful application.
I've looked all over these parts for a Model 20 in decent, useable condition. So far no luck. I could become jealous!
I've been thinking of trying to develope a load in the 120 gr. bullet range for deer, elk & bear. It is another of those round2it projects. Soon.

I have a Ruger 77R that I bought off a guy at a gunshow better than 15yrs ago. Its been a great little gun for me, used it mainly for varminting. I have shot 75 grainers almost exlusively. I first started out with the 75gr Sierra HP with IMR 4320...I have since swithced to the 75gr V-Max with IMR 3031..the load with 3031 is the accuracy load in the Sierra manual and it certainly lives up to it. I wouldnt part with my 250-3000 for the world.
 
I'm a 250 Savage loony too.
I have two of them, a custom on a Mauser action, and a Remington 700 Classic.
Like you say, accuracy is available in spades with this chambering. I LOVE mine, and can not think of a better round to start kids out hunting.
 
I have wanted one for awhile. A 700 classic would be nice to go with the one I have in .300 savage, but I have a soft spot for the old Ruger red pads.
 
The Classic is a nice looking rifle!! However mine is a work gun so pretty doesn't count for much. I made a grievious error is the first post. The rifle is a Mod. 16 FHSS. It will get rained & snowed on, drug along on a string and spend way to much time in a scabbard on the ATV or horse along w/ riding in the pickup. All things not conducive to maintaining beauty. Has anyone tried the Sierra 90 gr. HPBT Gameking. What results? Thanks

The Sierra 90 gn HPBT is the most accurate bullet in both of my 250 Savages.

Very Nice! Any idea about velocities? Not that it really matters. I have wondered about trying Varget & it looks like I had better give it a whirl.

I really like both mine. M99R from 1953 and a pre-warning M77 Ruger Tang Safety. I've got a Stevens 200 in 7-08 with a rough as a cob barrel. Thinking about a .250 barrel for it if I can find a decent stock.
 
The 250-3000 was the first commercial round in the year 1900 to have a velocity over 3000 fps----hence the name.
Today's powders should let you go a bit higher.

It's also the parent case to the 22-250, so some of us resize 250-3000 cases down to 22-250 whenever we get our hands on them.

To set the record straight: Charles Newton designed the 250-3000, aka. 250 Savage for the Savage Arms Co., at their request, in 1912. His idea and original design was for a 100 gr. bullet @ 2800fps. This was to exceed the ballistics of the 22 Savage Hi Power, a 70 gr. bullet @ 2800 fps. Savage engineers & possibly(probably) marketing people overruled Newton and loaded an 87 gr. bullet @ 3000fps. This was the limit of the 99 action w/the powders available @ the time. As Bigdog2 alluded to these velocity's can be bested with current powders. Factory ammo & most reloading manuals limit pressures to 45,000 psi in deference to older Savage Model 99's. The 22 Hi Power was designed by Mr. Newton during the winter of 1905-06 & introduced by Savage in 1911. This from a 14th. edition reprint of "Newton Arms Co." catalog.

It is a shame that not more gun makers offer the 250-3000 Savage. That is one very under-rated cartridge that didn't catch on enough with the public.It seems to me that back in the day it was sort of a race between the 250-3000 and the 22-250 and the latter won the race.
I do not personaly own one but my Uncle has a couple of them and swears by them and refuses to even try anything else for his needs.



Not wanting to highjack this thread but I have not read the name Newton in a very long time. He was a great inventor and innovater in his day. Too bad his company did not do better in it's day, if it would have been more prosperous he would truely be a household name today.
He had some great ideas and was certainly way ahead of his time in the gun world.Those here that know of his work understand where I am coming from.
