.220 Swift or .22-250 For coyote & Fox?

HI everyone,
New here and still learning.
Which caliber is the most accurate and hard hitting,
.220 Swift or .22-250 for coyotes and Fox?
Which is the best factory ammo and which is the best bullet if I decide to reload?
Does Barnes do a Swift bullet? As these seem to penatrate well and are hard hiting.
How many rifle makers do the .220 Swift in bolt action,as thats the action I want.
Thanks for any info.

If you dont reload use the 22-250. Ammo is easier to find.
The 220 swift will beat it for velocity, allthough I dont think a yote will be able to tell the difference. I have a ruger in 220 swift. it is a MKII varmint rig. scary accurate. I have a 22-250 Rem 700 and rem 788. Both are extremely accurate. It will be a toss up as to which one to get.
If you are not reloading right now, I would reccommend the 22-250. Use store bought ammo and save the hulls. If you decide to reload you have the most expensive componant. Just my opinion, Randy

I have a semi-custom 220Swift. As 17Shooter said, it is scary accurate and launches my reloads 55gr Starke bullet at a little over 3900fps. Accuracy is the high 1's to low 2's......Love that gun, but love the bushmaster Varminter better.....Never thought I would say I like a gas gun better than a bolt. I get better bang/flops with the swift, but if I miss the first shot that is generally it. If you reload go with the Swift it is a neat cartridge.

I have to agree with these guys. I love my swift. It kills with authority, and will let the air out of coyotes a loooong way out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifIt will be tough on fox fur, but if that's not a concern, it's pretty hard to beat.If you do a search here, you will find a lot of info on these two calibers.

BTW where are you located?

Usually either one of those cal.'s will cause severe damage on a fox and sometimes on a yote. If your not worried about saving the hides I would go with the 243 or 25-06, that is if you are looking to reach out and touch them with really impressive bang flops.

Thanks Fellas.
I think Ill go for the Swift for now.
I dont plan to load yet, but am working up to it.
I was talking to a couple of my freinds and they have told me even Deer up to the size of White tails have been taken with the Swift /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I dont plan to do that myself, as i use a 6.5x55 for that job.
What factory ammo is available for the Swift?
I think Norma do Swift, is this brand any good?
Another buddy of mine has a .204 and has killed a few coyotes with it, but mainly shoots foxes.
From what I have read on the .204, they explode too quickly, and dont kill right out, is this true?
Altough my buddy with the .204 has had no problems so far.
Then Ruger target grey in .220 Swift appeals to me at the moment, nice looking kit with that lovely laminated wood /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
Fur is not a problem with me, so it can do all the ripping it wants.

I have the Ruger Vt stailes/laminate in the 220 and in the 204. Both rifles shoot much better than I do.
For the 220 factory ammo, I use Hornady 60 gr. HP. So far it is very accurate as well as fur friendly. I've killed past 400 yds with it, as well as inside 50 yds. It just plain works. I've had more than a few rifles over the last 100 years /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifThis is one that will never get sold.

I like the 204 as well and would not worry about the killing power. I like it nearly as much as my 220. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Fox, The Ruger with the gray S/S and the laminate stock is the one I have. My longest kill with it, With a witness and later verified with a laser range finder, was 597 yds on a coyote. I use target knobs and have my settings marked at 200, 300, 400, and 500 yds. I dialed in the 500 yds setting, held a little high, and carressed the trigger. I could prob shoot at 5 more just like it and miss all five. But on this day the Gods were smiling down on me. I was shooting 55 gr Nosler Ballistic tip. I believe you will be pleased with your choice. Get the best optics you can afford, because the more you shoot it, the further you will want to try it.

I have both the .22-250 and two 220 Swifts, and I always seem to grab one of my Swifts.
If you are loading you own, I have found that 55 grain Sierra Balistic tips (Blitz King boat tails) over Reloader-15 and a CCI Bench Rest primers is both deadly and unbelievably accurate in all 3 rifles.
Best of luck to you.

Like a lot of these guys, I have the MKII VT laminate heavy barrel. I've reduced my (the gun's) favorite bullet to the 55gr Nosler along with RL 15. My load pushes it out at a little over 4000 fps. Late last winter I got rid of the $60 Tasco, and put a Burris Signature mil dot on it and was just floored by the accuracy and consistancy at 500 yds. If you do get a swift, keep in mind you'll eventually want a scope that will let you see what the gun can do (so to speak /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif).

Very impressive to say the least. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Brad, I started with a 3-9 Leupold. Now it has a 6-24 Sightron with the target knobs. That brings up another point, I never read on here anyone shooting the sightrons. I have 3 of them and they are great optics, IMHO. And one of the best warranties on the market. If you ever even think you have a problem. It has a counter gaurantee. Take it to a dealer, and he hands you a new one. Period, no questions or hassle

I've never tried a Sightron, but it sounds like you can't go wrong. I know a Loopy is a sure thing. My other swift has a cheap Simmons 6.5-24 that's never missed the mark. I'd like to replace it but can't quite bring myself to do it. 800+ rounds of prairie dogs and coyotes among other things, and still holds true.

Back in 65 when Remington came out with the 22-250 I got one. Out of the box it shot five shot groups under an inch ( that was good back in the mid 60s ) and played hell on predators out to 300 yards or so.

I shot an old Winchester M70 in 220 before I got the 250, I always thought it was a tad better back then and I still do.

To this day I still shoot both calibers, in my mind they are what the most serious of the serious predator hunters use, just my opinion.

I got a new toy that I think is maybe even better then the 250 and the swift using a 55 gr bullet...a 223WSSM. Only time will tell, but I already know it can shoot with em and the factory ammo is even faster at 3850 for a 55gr bullet.
