22 LR Question

May of last year I had surgery on my hands for carpal tunnel and trigger finger release. I was going kind of crazy not being able to do much so I grabbed my 10/22 and locked it in my tripod in the backyard. Grabbed a bunch of ammo from the stockpile and started shooting some targets. I could only get 40 yards, but the old girl did pretty good with Aguila bulk pack solid points. Don’t remember offhand exactly which ones though? Just something I grabbed to pull the trigger and go bang!… 40 yards, 10 shot group, 2 bad hands!

Can't beat that.

Is it just me or does the Aguila ammo have a weird smell to it when fired?

Not sure? Don’t have the best sniffer honestly. Had a concussion on the part of my brain that controls taste and smell. Weirdest thing I ever went through. Nothing tasted the same or smelled the same for the longest time. It’s super odd when your brain knows what something tastes like, but your tastebuds are telling it something different!

As far as I’m concerned, they can smell like skunk if they shoot well.

I just noticed the other day whenever I was shooting I shot 4-5 different kinds of Aguilas and they smelled a lot different than any of the rest. It may be the lube they use.

i have a savage B 22 precision in 22lr, i shoot it suppressed. these are the groups i shot with it at 25 and 50 yards with some different ammo, hope this helps.

You might do some further checking, that gun should be shooting groups half that size at 50yd... Maybe scope rings arent tight or something. It should be dang near one holing at 50, and definitely 1 holing at 25.. that is a hell of a weapon.

Heres the pics i could find on my phone. This is a $80 Marlin 25 bolt, bipod and back rest. 6-12x40. I know for a fact i have been at/under moa with it at 100yd but i dont have the picture to prove it. Like I said before its not normal, but im not questioning it. 7 shot groups because it has a 7rd mag.

thank you for the analysis
i'll get back out in warmer weather and see what i can do. i have killed groundhogs out to 98 yards with head shots. i'm pretty sure its the shooter and not the gun ;)

Or questions.

Like everyone else I have had 22's all my life, but never got into "precision" stuff with them. I just used them for snakes, tree rats, plinking, etc. Well a few weeks ago I bought a really nice Savage Mark II and this thing really has the potential to be a shooter. I bought about 12-13 different types of ammo to try and have been doing some testing.

1. I bought 4-5 different kinds of SK and I noticed that some of them even though they aren't labeled as subsonic are VERY VERY quiet and hit very low. Is this normal for SK stuff? I checked their web site and it seems that even their HV stuff is really slow.

2. What's the deal with the lube on them? They are SOAKED in lube.

3. I notice that none of their stuff is copper plated and everything that I have in other brands labeled for "hunting" is?
virtually all match grade ammo...not all...but virtually all match grade ammo will be subsonic or very close. I shoot Lapua CenterX and it's right at 1105 in the summer and 1070 in the winter...(still subsonic all year)
virtually all match grade ammo will be lubed, i say virtually...because I'm sure someone somewhere makes something that doesn't. I don't know of any.
copper plated does nothing for accuracy and IMO, does nothing to make it better for hunting. Shoot a cotton tail with a 40gr lead slug at 1000 fps kills just as dead as a copper plated 32gr slug at 1200.

It really comes down to what you wanna do with it and do you care what you're shooting.

I have a Savage MKII that shoots very good in the summer, but when temps drop...it's all over the place. Roughly 1.5" at 100 yds with a $300 gun is hard to complain about.
It doesn't hold a candle to my match rifle...but it's very good for what it is.

These are some random test loads out of my Savage MkII, it's amazing the difference ammo makes.

Like I said....I shoot CenterX out of my match rifle and it's on another level

Do you still have the factory trigger in the savage?
