.22 hornet or .221 fireball for contender?

Having loaded the Hornet for many years, on both single stage and progressive presses, all I can say is, you know not of what you speak!

Internet forums......having no experience with something and knowing not of what they speak doesn't stop people from speaking.

Speer Reloading manual.. they do know what they speak of.. and yes they do mention the problems specially around the neck area.

Juan

Well..... I suppose if you have no real experience with doing it, it must be a fact if it's in a Speer manual.

I guess I need to look at one I have (Speer manual) to see what I've been missing/doing wrong.

I think you'll be good to go with that 223 barrel. I had a Super 14 in 222 Rem that shot great. Took chucks out as far as 250 yards (missed a lot too, but thats the fun).

You say you have defensive handguns. If one is a 38 Spec try a low powered target load with wadcutters to dispatch coyotes. You don't need a lot of power at point blank range to kill one. I've used wadcutter target loads to hunt small game with. It's a blast.

And I sure don't what problems people have loading the 22 Hornet. Been loading them for a lot of years with no problems. Some of my cases have been fired 10 times and still going strong. I use Lil-Gun powder. They are low preasure loads.

That seems to be the only problem, if you can call it that from reloading the hornet, I, like many others believe the hornet it a magical round.. good varmint round low report, very low recoil and such.. This thread makes me want to get another one..

Don't let hornet troubles keep you away. I've never had trouble with the hornets. Just take your time and make sure the bullet is lined up when you seat them. I even use one of the lee hand presses that seam to take three hands to keep things lined up and squeeze the handles.

The next barrel for me will be the hornet just need to find one at a good price. Couldn't find one the last time I had funds and there was a deal on a 7TCU that I decided I needed. Fun little round to load and shoot. The TCUs Gives you a step up on the 223s.

I have a Ruger No3 in a K Hornet. Use to have a 77 in a K as well. I learned real quick that if you chamfer the case mouth on the standard Hornet they load just like anything else. The K is even easier. Its a cool little cartridge.

Doubt you get an answer from Boeydafunk, its a 14 year old post.

Go to Calhoun Bullet web sight and look in the left sidebar and scroll down to "Informative Articles" and find "To Bee or 223". It gives data for down loading 223 to 218 Bee and Hornet velocities. I use this data quite a bit. You can make great small game a finisher loads for your 223

Having shot a number of single shot rifles I much prefer a cartridge with a rim for positive extraction and much less chance slipping a round past the extractor when loading. Recently(in my lifetime) when Heym brought out the 5.6x50 Magnum they also released a Rimmed version for Stalking rifles, Combo guns and Drillings.
