204 vs 22 hornet

The 204 is based on the 222 magnum case. Quit a bit more capacity than a 22 hornet. Hornets are at there best at maybe 150 yds and less. The 204 which I have no experience with is maybe 250 to 300 yds. There are a few people here that have alot of experience with this cartridge. Do a search on 204 Ruger and you will see tons of info. From what I have heard the 204 leaves very little damage, given the shooter does his part. The 22 Hornet does little damage also, but has only about half the range at most.

They really are completly different, in every way possible. Like it was stated above do the search. There is alot of info in past threads that will help. What are you going to be using it on? what are your expected ranges? I love my hornet, but it has its limitations like everything, I will say this, you can reload a hornet for a lot less than most others.

I've been shooting a .204 for about a year and like the cartridge so much that I just received a new AR-15 upper in a 22" bull barrel from a reputable maker on the west coast. Once I get it broken in, it will be my primary varmint/predator weapon with my Savage BA .204 and my .223 upper in reserve. Ballistics on the .204 with a 200 yd '0' is +.9" at 100 yds and -1.2" at 300 yds. Considering the size of a Prairie Dog, that's a dead-on hold. The 40gr bullet is moving at 3900 fps at the muzzle with plenty of knockdown power out to about 400 yds.

www.rugerhunting.com is a web site devoted to the 204. I'm sure you can find alot of info over there.
Like Furhunter said the hornet has it's limitations. I have one that rides in my truck and a few days ago I saw a coyote just setting in a field at about 150 and had to just watch it untill it lost intrest in the mouse or whatever and left. I just am not confident over 100. The Hornet is great in the brush but like everything there's a trade out.
Good luck

You should have put the hurt on him!! For coyotes I load the 40 barnes verminator, or the nosler 45gr solid base for the hornet. I am going to try the 35gr v-max for bobs, hoping not to get exit wound. 150 is a ways but a hornet will do it, They dont bang flop all the time, no matter what you shoot them with!

OldTurtle,

What kind of lazer type bullets you shooting.I just looked at my loads for the .204 ruger and I see +.7 inch high at 100 yards with a 200 yard zero and -4.3 inches at 300 yards. You sure you're not shooting a lazer beam.LOL

All I know is what I'm getting at the range.. with the 40 gr. bullet. Those figures are out of a Savage F16 in the Weather Warrior series with Hornady factory loads. If I set my scope at +.9 inches at 100, a shotgun hull at 200 is dead meat and I'm just below it at 300. That's using a Sightron 4-16x mil-dot scope. I expect my new Mueller 8.5-25x mil-dot to do as well.. I do like my toys.. Maybe in my 'old age' I've started shaking a little more than I used to.. Big Grin /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
