17 Rem. vs. 17 Mach IV

My stolen 17 MACH IV was recovered, but due to weather exposure only the McMillan stock and Leupold Scope are in good shape. My gunsmith has already ordered the Remington 700 Action and has a Shillen barrel in 17 Rem. to go on it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with it -- just a lot less trouble not having to form brass, etc. I just wondered if anyone had some feedback on the 17 Rem vs. the Mach IV. It seems like it's only a tad hotter, but a lot less trouble.

i have had one for 7 or 8 yrs.they are great guns i shoot 20 grain berger bullets and have killed coyotes out to 425 yds. dead before they hit the ground. 20 grain hornady v max work but not as well. i have shot over 1000 coyotes with a 22-250 but this caliber is great. shoot them right and no pelt damage.

I have several 17 Rems. I almost went with the 17 Mk 4, and still think about doing it. But I don't want the hassel with the brass, and the 17 Rem dies are regular price, no custom dies needed. Plus I fiquire I could always light load it if I felt the need. Then there is the issue of buying factory cartridges if the need arrises. Also getting some actions to feed the 17 Mk 4 can be a pain. The 17 Rem is easy for most.

The barrel life isn't that big of an issue with me, since I target shoot a 222 mostly anyway.

If I were going to do ALOT of 17 cal shooting, then I would have the smaller 17. It is a very neat little round.

But if you already have all the stuff for reloading. What the hell, go for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
