12 ga. Coyote loads

I think as long as you get decent patterns at that speed and keep them inside 50 yards they should do fine. That is pretty fast for lead.

I shoot 1 oz of NP BBs at 1150 out of my 16ga 2.5" shells and 1 1/4 oz NP BBs at 1200 out of my 2.75" 12ga. I keep them inside 40 yards and they work great.

Thanks
That was my thought. It’s a load I loaded. It’s shy of 1.5oz with 28.5 grains of longshot. I don’t have a way to verify the speed other than being told that by Wade (Bubba Rountree which I trust) It puts about 10-12 pellets in an 8” circle at 40 yards thru a pattern master. I’ve had a horrible time trying to find a load to pattern well thru my 870. Tried all types of chokes. I think I’m getting picky and looking for the perfect combo.

That load will penetrate a coyote out to 100 yards. F shot is good to like 70. 1 pellet in the lungs and it is finished…10 and it will drop stone dead.

Wow ! I’ve always been a rifle guy and after reading on here about many people would rather shotgun coyotes than use a rifle. I figured i would give it a try. I would have never attempted past 50.
Interesting
Thanks

If you go to the new Tungsten shot you will be amazed.
#5 tts is like f shot. I can't afford tungston to reload with but I cast tt lead shot that's 21 caliber.
I get 49 pellets and 1500 fps in a 3" 13 gauge using steel powder 37 gr. it will pass through a coyote at 80 yards.

Steel powder (like finding a unicorn)? I’m using the same basic load but with Longshot. Getting 20 pellets inside 12” at 40 yards.

What chokes do you guys find that works with large shot? I’ve loaded everything from 1.5 oz to 2 oz f shot and can’t get great patterns with any chokes. I probably have 10# of lead f shot I have about given up on.

Lots of different experiences leading to lots of different opinions. My experience, a lot of my shotgun shots are at the south end of a northbound coyote and #1 lead is just weak sauce for that. In lead, I don't like anything smaller than T and I consider that pretty range limited. My favorite lead load is F as it is more pellets than #4B and will still fairly reliable break down a coyote with a going away azz shot at 35 yards. That coyote will almost always need to be shot again, too.

I use almost exclusively HD and Tungsten though. BB in the HD, 2's, 3's or 4's in Tungsten.

But my opinion, good luck finding a coyote hit with a going away shot using #1 lead.

The ones that work with your gun and your loads. Read the big patterning thread here. It's crazy how different it is from gun to gun, load to load, person to person. And that's before taking into account the big differences in what we each consider a good pattern for coyote. There just isn't any getting away from doing your own patterning with your own loads to find out.

I actually dropped shot size to improve patterns. Would really like to shoot f shot if possible. What do most consider a good 10 inch pellet count? Again, maybe I’m overthinking this
Thanks

Duh…I somehow read that first post as #1 Buck.

#1 birdshot is going to require close targets.

For bigger shot like BB, T and F, I have been using a 0.670 turkey choke. Getting 20 of 50 pellets inside 12”.

Think if/when I decide to daytime call with a shotgun I’ll just use my little 20ga turkey gun and shells…I know it’ll kill’em out to 40yds for sure.

12ga. 2 3/4 #4 buck has killed a lot of Coyotes and Pigs for me inside of 50 yards, further than 50 yards I use a rifle, shotguns don't make very good Sniper Weapons. Murl B.

I guess one last question. You guys loading your own f shot are you using buffer? I am and not convinced it helps that much?
I’m open to any good #f with longshot ideas because it’s what I would really like to shoot.
Thanks again!!

One of the current loads I’ve tried is
3”
Mg 42 wad
725 grains of F shot (46)
26 gr of Longshot
1 scoop of buffer
Getting 8 in 10-12” circle at 40 yards
That doesn’t seem great to me?
Maybe I’m wrong and just looking for better?
Thanks
