Would you start with? had a electronic years ago never had any luck with it but think it was more of a lack of critters but it's been 20+ years ago thanks

I'd get something like a FP Prowler(e-call) and an open and close reed hand calls. We have some dandy call makers here on the forum.

Cottontail and Jackrabbit work very well for me. In hand calls, I've found a difference between plastic, acrylic and wood barrel calls. Sometimes one works better than another.

So, let's see, with modern core math, that would work out to 6 calls. I call that a good start, lol.

The 2 hand calls I always have with me on a stand is a 1960’s era Thompson closed reed call (Jack rabbit reed). And my Critr’call Songdog Jr. open reed call.

Question can be taken different ways...
Just 2 call types... 1. Open reed for versatility. 2. Closed reed for simplicity.
Just 2 call sounds...1, Cottontail / Hare for prey distress. 2. Coyote (young/pup)
or
Get an e-caller and have every sound you could ever want at your finger tips.

I like wood bodied open reed calls for their versatility. One of my favorites is the Bunny Bomb I got from badtothebone on the Custom Call forum here. I don't know whether he's still making calls or not...

I totally agree with DesertRam. The call makers here make very nice calls and are always willing to help you along the way. No need in shopping elsewhere đź‘Ť
I’ve had excellent results with all of my purchases. Not a single complaint from me!

Given I have knowledge on how to run open reeds I would go with a open reed distress which can usually be manipulated for cottontail or jackrabbit (depending on the call) and a smaller open reed howler which can be used for coyote vocals and jack and fawn distress. With those 2 calls I can go a whole day of calling. If I'm green as grass and new to it all I would go with an open reed howler and a closed reed jackrabbit.
