To be legal, Past Kramer Jct if your heading up 395.
Past Barstow if your going up I-15. Have fun exploring. Get a Auto club map of San Bernadino County and pick a road.

Stay east of Hwy 14/395 so you are out of the condor (no lead) zone unless you shoot unleaded bullets/pellets.

whats the hunting like right around the nevada cali boarder, halloran summit etc on 1-15, I drove through there a couple weeks ago, didn't have a map so I don't know if there is any water near by, looked like interesting country though

I'm in Cali, 75 miles from Reno NV. The coyote hunting is very hard this year, I havent even got 1. I'm thinkin when the walmart here had lots of hand calls alot of new guys went out and educated the coyotes not knowing how to hunt a coyote.

t/c223encore.

Maddy, this is the hard time of the year to start hunting coyotes. What you got left is smart coyotes, educated coyotes and on top of that it's breeding season.
Southern California is so over hunted it's downright crazy, mostly all new people out there.
You'd be much better off finding one of the many predator hunting clubs in southern California, they well show you how and where to go and let you know about the laws.

thanks everyone for the replys....i have thought of going to barstow cus the area looks good....i have had some luck in califorina city...and me and my bro have some killer spots just north of bakersfield that always produce coyotes... but thats all private land dariy men

Hey, I resemble that remark! I am not new to the area, but new to the idea of pruning a few coyotes, mainly to protect my own pets. I will probably just shoot them from my back patio deck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I lived in that High Desert for years, even started a predator hunting club out there. Great dove, quail, chukar and duck hunting if you knew where to go.

I kinda miss my old home, to many people were moving out there from the big city and bringing all the big city problems with them, it was time to move.

A long time ago we hunted ducks out at Cronese Lake, out past Afton. On the way home, we would stop at the market at the Afton off ramp for a soda. People would ask us where we found all that mud we had on us, way out here in the desert!

I just tried Halloran Summit last weekend. I did 12 stands and did not call in a single thing. No sign or tracks. I did not even see a single jackrabbit.

I also tried Red Mountain a couple weeks ago. Exact same thing. I was absolutely amazed at the lack of life in the desert.

I think the lack of rain last year has seriously hurt the coyote population in the Southern California Deserts. To make matters worse, I have heard rumors that Parvo has knocked out about 75% of the coyote population. Has anyone else heard this too?

It is a hard year to be a coyote hunter in Southern California deserts right now. That is for sure.

Grizz here
Real tough season here in So Cal. I don't know whats up this year. Places Like Red Mountain and Halloran Summit get hit hard all the time but this year was less than disirable.
Strange, last year was best in a long time. Grizz

I don't believe the parvo story's, they say the same thing about Nevada. I think it's a few things that add up to be a big thing on the coyote population.
First off there are way more people then ever hunting coyotes.
More people hunting them all year sure don't help the numbers.
The ADC doing fly-bys in cattle country, that's just about everywhere in the SW.
I believe that coyotes learn real fast and pass it on. If you don't believe that one, ask the ADC if some coyotes don't lay down when they hear a plane flying low.
The more coyote hunters don't pay attention or don't care, the worse it's going to get.

That's how I feel about it.

Billy, you might be right about Parvo. I don't know. I was just wondering based on rumors.

The one thing I do know is that I do not see ANY sign (tracks, scat) in areas where I used to see tons in the deserts. As a matter of fact, the entire desert seems without life ... no birds, lizards, rabbits, mice, nothing!

If the coyotes are educated. They learned to clean up after themselves too. And, they took all the other creatures with them.

Just trying to give you guys something to think about. Nobody knows for sure why coyotes numbers are down, but you can bet there is a reason.
Think about this one. If 75% of the coyotes are killed off every year ( Government stats I read on the internet ) and you got hunters and Government hunters going out and killing denned up females. Each female has 6 to 8 pups, how many are you actually killing?
If you kill 5 females you really killed 30 or 40 of next years coyotes. How many times does that happen every year? Sooner or later the numbers have to go down, don't ya think? Just something to think about.
