Went to the lease this morning to top off my feeders and check cameras. Planned to get there before daylight to hopefully knock off a big hog.
I had to pick between my 2 stand locations/ one has a cell camera where I been seeing lots of hog, but they didn’t show up in daylight yesterday; and another with no cell camera. I picked the one without the cell camera sunctrhe didn’t show the day before. Before the feeders went off I checked the camera at the other spots and hogs had already shown up. When the feeders went off nothing showed up for several minutes so I decide to get down and go to the tuck and drive around to the other spot.
When I got over there there was a small buck at the feeder I have to walk by to get to my stand, and nothing at the other feeder I could see from the stand. I decided to get in the stand and wait, and if nothing showed just start filling feeders.
A few minutes later I saw 2 hogs cutting across a lane in front of me. Apparently they had already cleaned up the corn from the feeder where the camera was and had been headed towards the one I had to walk by. The lane I run perpendicular to the 2 feeders. It looked like 2 boars and I think they had my wind. They circled back to the cell cam feeder but never could get a good shot. Saw a follower that did the same thing. Looked to the feeder I I had walked by and small hog was there, then saw the follower behind the boars stick back out it smell the air.
Bad mistake, but it took a 6.5 CM bullet in the ear at 140 yards. Looked back to the other feeder and the small one was still there. Tried to get lined up on him, but just as I was he stepped intro the brush and made the same loop the other 3 did. He must have smelled the one I shot because he circled back the way he came but disappeared in the brush.
The one I shot ended up being about a 100 pound sow. I gutted and loaded her up topped off the feeders and headed back home.
I called a friend who I saw at the store on the way out this morning and he was wanting a head shot sow to cook in the ground for a big feed next Saturday at his deer camp. He met me back at the store and til the hog. He had just finished skinny other hog from a trap and has 2 more still in another trap. They should be eating good next weekend.
I have never cooked a hog in the ground like he does, but it sounds pretty good. He wants head shot hogs because he fills them with potatoes onions ans other vegetables and then sees them up before the go in the ground. He said if they have a bullet hole through the body it doesn’t work out well.
