Thermal binoculars - PULSAR MERGER LRF XT50

Nvision Nox 35 is the best that I have ever owned/used and I've used a lot including Flir, a couple of different Pulsars, and Trijicon.
With that said the thermal industry is changing so fast now that the next best thing might be out by the time this is posted.
The Flir Scion was a big disappointment. I know several guys who bought them and they all got rid of them pretty fast. IMO Flir is not a competitive player in the civilian thermal market.

There are BETTER options...seeing how holding binoculars for hours a night won't be fun.
For those of us like myself why do you like a mono better then the bino setup?? If you're spending long periods of time scanning I would think the 1280 Merger XT50's would be easier on the eyes and cause less strain on your eyes. If my thinking is wrong I am totally good with that but if you don't mind could you explain why so I can better know what I don't know. Thanks

I have the same question. In my limited experience, a monocular isn't easy on the eyes. But, I will be the first to admit that I am NOT an expert on thermals. So, I am open to what more knowledgeable people have to say.

Here is my 02.

I always scan and shoot with the same eye to maintain night vision in the other eye.

Thermals have come a long way and a lot of the scopes out now are as small and light as some monoculars. I have now started using scopes as scanners. I have an AGM 25mm Rattler and a Trijicon 20mm Reap IR that both work well in either application.

You get more bang for your buck and if you ever want to sell the unit it can be sold as a scope so you have a larger market to sell to.

I use a picatinny rail tapped 1/4x20 and a camera handle with a lanyard attached. I can brace my elbow on my chest if my arm gets tired.

I think one of the new AGM scopes with the 12 micron V2 sensor would make a nice all around unit.

Thinking of a camera mono pod for my ATN scanner. I can then lean it against side of blind to pick up rifle. Otherwise I got to find a place to set it which is difficult at nite. Wrist strap is nice but it clunks on everything when shooting. That rail on top of the pod would allow using the Rattler as a scanner.

So it sounds like it's pretty much a convenience less overall bulk and weight as well as a personal preference thing and not really a they aren't very good thing, yes??

And to be absolutely crystal clear this is purely a I don't know what I don't know thing is why I'm asking.

I know nothing about a thermal binocular, or their cost.
I also know nothing about the costs involved in a helmet. Would it be cheaper to have a helmet setup?
I've seen several gentlemen on PM using them in the videos they so kindly share.
What does the thermal binocular or helmet setup do for you?
Can anyone explain/

Gman! Excellent point. I did not think of that. Using my FLIR, I noticed my scanning eye is pretty worthless for a minute or two when I remove the monocular. It would be BAD if both eyes were like that.

Do you think the 640 Rattler is a good choice with all the 1280ish scopes that are out there now?

For coyotes, do you like the 35mm or 50mm lens on the Rattler?

Most of my daytime shots are less than 150 yards. Heck, most are 50-75 yards.

I scan with my left hand/eye and shoot right handed/ right eye. I'm left handed.

When coyotes are coming in, I can control gun on tripod with right/ and use remote, and get gun in position while still scanning- I do not get on gun until I'm positive on the number of coyotes coming in and such.
I don't worry about loosing my "night" vision because by the time I'm off the gun my eyes have adjusted and after I kill I'm back on the scanner anyway.

Once you get used to doing it that way it becomes second nature . I know most people can't multi task with both hands and aren't ambitious, it's so much more efficient....but to each his own.

Going to add that I scan while walking to and from set....I carry gun on tripod , over my right should...

If money is no object the 1280 core would be nice but not necessary IMO.

I depends on your hunting distance. A 640 12 micron core with a 35mm lens with give you around 12.5 degrees of FOV. That's a good all around happy medium IMO. The more FOV you have the less you will miss when scanning and the less you will need to move your head back and forth. Nothing wrong with the 50mm but the FOV will start to get tight except for longer ranges.

You might consider the AGM Clarion dual lens scope.....I think the 384 will be my next unit.

Since March of 23 my lt eye has been useless. Until then I used a Hogster r25 on a selfie stick to scan with and never felt that I needed both eyes to scan. The selfie stick rests on top of my chest pack so I am holding none of the scanner's weight. Used that r25 until about a month ago when I bought a Rix Stride. Most of my hunts are 'relatively' tight quarters' so I want a good FOV.
Unlike Limbhanger, I almost always walk in with a 'night eyes' red headlight cause at 74 this month I don't need to be falling down :).
