Flocks of geese and swan headed east over our heads as we loaded our gear onto our bikes for the ride in. We were trying to time this stand to have it just dark enough not to be seen, but early enough to beat any coyotes into the field. We set up our stand with eager anticipation, but coyote was reluctant tonight. Prey sounds didn't do it, Lone howls didn't do it. It was all crickets for about 30 minutes and I thought coyote had beaten us on this night. I gave coyote a favorite serenade and he just couldn't stand the pressure anymore. Coyote began to challenge and others opened up as well, but only the big male came calling when I challenged him back. It took a fight sound to convince him but even then coyote was wary and decided to start to circle downwind. I waited as long as possible knowing he was close to winding us. Coyote stopped to mark his territory and make his Last Scat. The 223 with a 50 v-max punched his lights out at 164 yds. I couldn't convince any others to make the trip, and we packed our gear and called it a wrap.
