The grandson and I

I checked the weather report last night and the wind was supposed to be minimal this morning so I texted the grandson to see if he wanted to go calling in the morning. He was game for it so a plan was made to meet at 0515. He's only been calling once before with me and he got his first coyote with my shotgun but that was a few years ago. First stand of the morning was a flat brushy set where I usually carry my shotty but this morning I opted for something out of the norm, a CZ scorpion carbine PCC shooting Norma MHP monolithic hollow points. We had one come in minutes after starting the call. I muted the call and when the coyote stopped it was partially blocked by a bush. It then got down wind of the call and retreated quickly. No shot for me and the grandson didn't see it till it was running away. I continued the call and switched to coyote pup distress 3 on the shockwave a couple minutes later. Another or the same coyote returned. When it stopped i took a shot even though it too was partially blocked by a creasote bush. Pretty sure I hit a branch and no hit was evident. Checked for blood but saw none and a couple coyotes barked and yapped at me while I searched. My grandson never saw the second coyote.

We moved down the road about a half mile. I wasn't very hopeful due to the close proximity to the last stand but since we were there we might as well give it a go. Another flat brushy set but with a 10ft tall berm to sit on for some elevation. At about the 12 -13 min mark I was about to call the stand when I see a coyote streaking in from my left. The grandson was too my left about 20 yrds and as I got the coyote in my scope I hear him shoot. The coyote does a few spins and then lines out. No shot for a follow up from me due to bushes. I asked if he saw it go down and he said he thought so. A quick search and we found it laying about 50 yrds away. First coyote with the AR15 I gave him for Christmas a couple years ago.
A few more blank stands and we called it a morning and headed for home.

Thanks for sharing a great hunt w/your grandson, Lance, and congratulations to your grandson on some fine shooting & first rifle coyote.

HOM material, for sure.

Nice memory for sure. I have some of them with our oldest daughter until college and adulthood change her mind and our first grandson until a driver's license and girls changed his mind.

Here's what I find funny. People talk about hunting "thick" cover and by what you see in that picture, you'd think you'd be able to see coyotes coming a mile away. But when you sit on the ground, you can barely see 50 yrds but only in specific directions. You have to pick where you set up carefully.

I get what you’re saying for sure. But I know for certain when a lot of guys say “thick cover” it is in fact much thicker than that picture portrays. Hell, I feel spoiled up here in the northeast compared to the southeast coyote hunters. Some of that cover would make a snake think twice!
