Stuck a stick in my eye.

I always walk in to a stand without any light except to open a gate, cross a fence, etc. I scan with my thermal and try to hug close to a fence row, tree line, etc. The other night while I was walking in a coyote howled out in front of me, out of sight but not too far away. There is an overgrown cedar fence row that I usually set up against so I hurried in along that row while scanning the field with my left eye. I knew I was in/under the cedar limbs but what I did not know was that there was a broken off limb, about 1/2 inch in diameter and exactly at my eye level. I walked right into it and it stuck me in my right eye. It hurt so bad that I quit and went home. It continued to hurt all night. The next morning my eye was pasted shut and still hurt a lot. I went to my Dr and he said that I had a bruise on my eyelid and a BB size puncture in the white part of my eye. He prescribed 4 medications. It continued to hurt bad all that day. It felt like I had a piece of broken glass in my eye and nothing I did gave me any relief. Thankfully the next morning it was much better and I don't have any permanent damage.
Just a reminder that I need to be more aware of what is around me while I'm walking in without a light. No coyote is worth a serious injury.

Crawling through the outside rows of a grove raccoon hunting, I had the thorn from a Russian Olive go into my tear duct. My buddy was in the truck, I told him get it out. He used a needle nose pliers and pulled it. I was looking at his face(holding a Wheat light on my face for him while he worked) and heard him say damn. And then he said that must have been in 3/4 of an inch!!

Hope it all works out for you Mike. That is why I use my light to navigate unless a very bright moon and wide-open field. If that happened to me, I would have to sit down and hopefully speed dial someone cause my left eye does not work worth a damn.

Did the same thing chasing bad guys down in Douglas, AZ about 15 years ago. Mesquite stick and I had to go to the emergency room. It didn’t hurt near as much the first day as it did when it was healing. Had to wear an eye patch and looked like a retarded pirate for three weeks

Oh man, that sucks! Speedy recovery to you, and thanks for posting. It serves us all well to have a reminder that we have to be careful for our own safety. As much as we enjoy doing what we do, bad things can and do happen in the blink of an eye.

No pun intended! Again, I hope you have a quick recovery and get back out there!

I feel your pain. I had that happen to me walking into a set a couple years ago. short sapling was caught on my rifle. When I bent down to dislodge it, somehow it snapped back into my eye. I tried to continue hunting, but I ended up having to head back home. Went to the med center the next day because my eye was still irritated and bloodshot red. They put some drops in my eye and said that I scratched my eye pretty bad. I couldn't hunt until the next weekend, but it could have definitely been a lot worse....

When I was running dogs with others, there were many times that the guy in front of me would pull a limb foward and then let it go which would slap you in the face or eye. Once I was going through a yaupon thicket and the end of the limp went in the corner of my eye between the socket and eyeball. Hurt like hell for an hour then stopped so I count myself lucky.

Anyway, glad your fine now!

You got lucky. I've been going for 10 years without a light and didn't want to break the bank so bought a NVG30 this year with the wide angle lens. It's a good enough image I won't get poked in the eye the monocular is over anyway.

Man. A eye injury sucks.

A few years ago I was deer hunting in a strong wind which was making my eyes water. I reached up to wipe my right eye with my jacket sleeve and the velcro tab went across my eye ball. Ended up having to go to the eye dr to have a protective contact put in it. that was a horrible week. goodness. I pray I never have to go through that again.

Same to you.

Had muffler rusty dust get in the eye once - doc got it out with a magnet. Not fun. Was to have a eye appt today but doc died (in his sleep) so a different doc Wed. Probably need to get the cornea bump scraped again. Probably last DL renewal next year, eye test mandatory.
