Well, it was a long 4 days, but man was it a great time. I headed to NV for 4 days of hunting with my good buddy Lance once again and it proved to be a blast as usual. We met up on Wed night in Vegas and then set out early Thursday morning for a state wide jaunt which ended up clocking us 1000 miles.
Before I get this started, let me explain the "Pink Pansy" part of this story. A little while a go, my FX5's were back at FoxPro for upgrades and on a joke I dared a certain somebody that he wouldn't paint one of them pink, when he joked about it. Well my FX5's came back unharmed. Until I visited the Dillon's and FoxPro for Christmas. It was then that the whole crew presented me with a one of a kind Pink Camo FX5. HILARIOUS!!! I vowed to slay the coyotes with the now officially named "Pink Pansy" and post all the reports possible. To take it even farther, we borrowed an idea from Mr. Carver with his Hat of Shame and I brought my girls Tiara as mine and Lance's hat of shame. Since neither of us seemed to be able to miss, the coyotes got to wear it, plus it went well with the Pink Pansy. Thanks to FoxPro for being friends enough to come up with stuff like this and keeping the fun in this crazy Predator World.
Now on to hunt: First stand of the trip, we had a female doing invitation howls as we approached the stand so we set up quick and got to calling with "Waning Jack". Within 3 minutes I see her streaking across the open at 600yd coming to the call. She checked up at about 125yds and Lance knocked her senseless with the .25-06, but by some miracle she got up, literally carrying her front leg, shoulder and all she managed to escape and not be found, but surely no longer alive.
Lance was on the gun again shortly after and at the 3.5min mark of "Lightning Jack" this male came running in and stopped on the opposite hill looking right at us. Lance settled the crosshairs on his chin and that's right where he hit. You can see the bullet graze in the picture and it ended up in his neck, DRT.
And of course he was the first to pose with the "Pink Pansy" and the Tiara of Terror.
3rd coyote of the day came as we were overlooking a 100yd wide wash that was really thick. At 4.5mins of "Waning Jack" I saw a coyote come into the wash, bouncing his way through the thick stuff. STOP, oh crap the wind changed, coyote burned us and starts bugging out. He was dumb enough to stop at around 200yds and bang flop from my .22-250.
We made camp that night and enjoyed an awesome fire, awesome SoreLoser Ribeye's on an open grill and a really cold, cold morning in the tent. HOLY CRAP was it cold.
Next day started out really slow and found us trudging through 18 inches of snow, which quickly made us decide to head back down hill in a hurry. Once we got down, we found our next victim. Not long after the "Pink Pansy" was fired up I noticed some Magpies going crazy and flying up a wash, Coyote Maybe?? At 6.5mins, Lance said "here comes a dog" and he was full bore for the Pansy and the SP-55 we had blasting "Waning Jack". I couldn't get the call shut off in time and he ran right up to it and just kind of looking puzzled as to the Pink Rabbit in the bush, he didn't have to think long as I ended the ordeal pretty quick.
Later in the day found us in some Juniper/Sage valley areas and we found a really promising spot, got the call set up and started on the "Lightning Jack". About 5mins in, we had one coming from out of the valley of sage and up to the call. He never stopped and winded the call once he got right next to it, but Lance put a quick running shot on him and rolled him down the hill at 60yds.
We found a hotel for the night, since we were farther North and the temp was even colder than the night before and headed back out in the morning. We started on a Ranch that we have called before and it wasn't long before we had one in the scope. This male came in down wind to "Byron's Male Jack" and busted us. He came from behind a hill that we couldn't see, but he started bugging out within view and stopped when I lipsqueaked him at 100yds. Lance took the only shot he had (HEAD) and did some major reconstruction to this poor dude. I said with the Tiara of Terror on he looks like a surprised "Miss America Winner", with a jacked up grill of course.
Lance was again on the gun when we called in a triple not far outside of town. We heard them yipping/rally howling, whatever you want to call it, while we were setting up and they were close. Well 2.5mins into "Cranky Cardinal" had them running in front of us. Too many to chose from and the joys of hunting with the camera came out as we couldn't get out act together or any of the coyotes stopped. Once we did, the camera was on one coyote and the shooter on the other standing just in front of him. But, another dead coyote none the less as Lance made a perfect DRT shot to the shoulder on this female. One quick check for male or female revealed that this one had obviously just come into heat.
We wrapped up the day with another succesful stand almost at sunset. Within 2mins of "Cranky Cardinal" I noticed a coyote coming full speed behind Lance and changed direction at 5yds, but wasn't too scared and kept worrying about the call. I switched to "Pup distress" to get him to stop and then this female showed up on the seen only to see the other one running away. I hurried and switched to "Waning Jack" and they bothed stopped at 100yds. Lance got the lead in the view finder and I got the lead in the scope and that's all she wrote. Once again, we noticed that this female was also in heat. Observation being that the only day we called multiples, seemed to be the day we noticed the females came in heat.
Here she is posing with the newly named "FURDOWN BUCKET".
We called in a several other coyotes throughout the trip that either busted us, or we just couldn't get shots at, but all in all we killed our fair share and didn't get skunked, got some great footage of coyotes being killed and coyote running away and overall just had a blast.
A word for my hunting partner:
My good buddy Lance being one he11 of a nice guy by volunteering to sit behind the camera so I can shoot a couple.
You can't ask for a better hunting partner and one that only looks to have a good time no matter what. Thanks for putting up with me and my obsessive need for "ELEVATION and VISIBILITY" all the time. Thanks for the laughs and memories, I can't wait to do it again.
Thanks FRIEND. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
