Sons First Coyote of the Year

Mitchell and I went out Saturday night around 11 PM to try a few spots. We haven't been out a whole lot this year. Seems like when we can get out the wind is switching around or now with the Feb. moon we get a warm spell and the snow has a thick crust on it which made it extremely hard to get around.
1ST Set. We set up on the East side of a large hay field with our backs agianst a large tree overlooking some small woodlots. Wind is from the West. There was a lot of traffic on the road behind us so I tried to call when cars weren't coming. I did a little distress and nothing so I let out a howl and immediately had a pack howling back from a couple hundred yards from the West. We played with these for over an hour but they just wouldn't budge so I do some pup distress and within 5 minutes here they come. We see one coming at a dead run with 2 more trailing. Mit gets turned but I'm too far behind and to his left to get on them good so I try to twist and shoot Left handed. Mit shoots and drops his and the others bug out. I try a long shot but miss. One happy boy!

2ND set. We stop on the road and agian the cars keep coming, I step out and look over the field and a coyote is crossing 100 yards out. We give it a little time and try to sneek out between cars driving by but it's just too crunchy and as soon as I howl he lets out with a non stop bark session. Gigs up so we head out.

3RD set. No takers except for the dogs barking across the street but I did get another picture for the wifes scrapbook from sleepyhead. Seems to be a pattern here.

4TH set. Park the truck a little further and try to sneek in and set up. First call howl and we get another chewing out. This one is over a little hill and we can't see him but he's really giving it to us. I turn on the pup distress and finally get a look at him. He sits on a little snow bank and continues to bark so I took a shot and was a little off on the yardage, clean miss.
Not sure if we'll get out any more this year as Mit want's to get back to fishing but for the tough conditions and little time it's been great.
