It's been a long month and I've been out of the calling most of it. I did get out on Friday night and called in a pair on a timber road. When I started the stand the wind was from the east at my 12 o'clock position. Coyotes answered from about 400 yds to the NE or 10:30. After some coaxing and a fight sound the pair popped out on the timber road, but I felt that all too familiar wind on the back of my neck. Wind had switched to my 8 o'clock going to my 2 o'clock so it was wafting down the right side of the timber road. The female was in the lead and almost immediately began getting just enough scent to make her spooky. She did work in a little closer and got to 174 yds. but it was evident she wasn't coming any closer. About that time the male lagging behind and further to the right side (my view) got enough scent that he was bugging out. I knew it was now or never and took the shot. She was DRT and the male never gave me an opportunity even though I worked hard to call him back.
Here is the female. She was a very pretty and healthy-looking coyote as well as being fairly large for a female.
