Savage 24V-D

I just found in a pawn shop a Savage 24V-D chambered in 223/20 gauge (23/4-3 inch). Does anyone have experience with a red dot or scope mounting. I started cleaning it and figured out quickly that taking it apart completely is beyond my limited skills so it's off to a gunsmith for a tear down and cleaning. Thanks for any help - looking forward to AWS's experience with combo guns. :)

Does it have a grooved barrel for rings? If so you can get adaptors to go from the 3/8 groove to weaver rings. If it doesn't have the grooves or D&T'd you'll have to have it drilled for a weaver base.

The savage 24 doesn't lend itself to scope use very well as the hammer and selector on the nose of the hammer end up under the scope ocular bell and you have to mount the scope high to be able to reach them. A holographic or red dot might work well. I had the exact rifle many years ago and it killed stuff. I personally like my combo guns with two triggers and a safety.

The one I had years ago was nothing but trouble. The two barrels were not regulated closely enough to be together. And the scope would shake loose after a dozen 12 gauge shells were fired. Nice concept that was poorly executed.

I bought one in 30-30 over 20 gauge. While I hope to not burst your bubble but as GC has said above nothing but trouble. the rifle barrel and shot gun have nowhere the same POI and I could never get very accurate with it.
