Third stand of the night and I’m set up facing S/SW with a W/NW wind. I have a nice big field where I’m facing thinking the coyotes are in the bottom South of the field.
I have a pond to my East behind me. Started with some prey at low volume but that wind was blowing pretty good and I was a decent distance away from the bottom.
I cranked the volume and went with some howls and they answered behind me sorta North of the pond. I repositioned and got ready. It took a good 10min going back and forth with vocals with a pair answering periodically. Finally one came from the cover and gave me a wide open broadside shot. Yeah I aimed for a behind the shoulder shot just to see what would happen vs the shoulder shot.
At the shot I heard the hit and as you can see ole boy took off. I played some fights and yips for another 5-10mins and when nothing else showed up I went ahead and downloaded the video to see where exactly it was located at the shot. I was beginning to doubt myself until I got to the spot and there was blood. It was a very easy track and I was really surprised at how far it made it before running out of blood. A nice sized male with a small entrance hole and a serious exit hole, lol. I still don’t know how he ran as far as he did, about 60yds or so.

They can cover some ground in the few seconds they have. In open ground it's not a big issue. Where I hunt, it means briars, lots of thick briars to search in.

Luckily he went down a feed trail on the other side of those big pines instead of the briars. Still would’ve been an easy find. I honestly haven’t seen but a couple blood trials like that in my life.
I work on the plantation as a second job and have a pair of Filson Chaps I wear calling when it’s cold out. I have a pair of Dans in the truck as well. Briars are bad, but man those cockleburs are rough without chaps, lol. I’m just glad we’re having some cold weather and I don’t have to wear my snake boots.
