i have a ruger m77 i bought from the pawn shop its a bull barrel 243 does anyone else have a bull barrel this old mine is a bicentinal model almost all the blueing is still left on the bolt face does anyone else have one and can tell me if that means it has not been shot very much /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I would look at the bore, the bluing on the bolt face means just that...bluing on the bolt face, but it does not signify it has not been shot a lot.

BTW, the 77/MT are nice rigs, have not seen one that didn't shoot.

A bolt face is easy to re-blue. Like Buzz said, check the bore. You are looking for signs of throat errosion and dark spots. If the rifle wasn't cleaned well, or shot hot, the bore will tell the tale.

Let us know how it shoots. You can alway rebarrel it if it doesn't. You have a good foundation to work with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Look for "gas cutting" on the boltface. That tell-tale circle around the firing pin hole on the bolt face. If you find that on the bolt face, it has had quite a few hundred rounds down the bore.

I have one. It is very accurate, but to heavy to carry. I have shot a few critters out the truck window with it.

I have the 280, 308, 243, and 220 all in 77v old model. I had the 25-06 & 22-250 but stupidly traded. All cost less than $350. the best being the swift with 10X leopold scope.
I would scope it and see how it shoots. If it hits moa who cares how many rounds its shot.
