Anybody that has read my posts probably knows that I don’t shoot fox, and stick to coyotes. I call in fox regularly, and last night I pulled in a red. It was super bright, extremely cold, and with the snow pretty much gone the frozen ground was crunchy sounding and the cut cornfields were extremely noisy. Not ideal conditions, but I was absolutely in need of some calling.
Coyotes were silent and unwilling to show themselves to any of my sound offerings, so when this red showed up I was thankful to see it. It came in well into a stand that I had played rabbit and bird distress, and them some coyotes lone howls. After a few minutes of silence I picked it up well downwind of the caller and circling. I started trying to coax it with more distress and it was definitely interested, but very cautious. It swung back and forth for probably 3 or 4 minutes about 80 yards downwind of the caller but wouldn’t commit. Just for kicks and to see what would happen I played some low volume red fox pup distress. It got an immediate reaction… Ole’ Red made a fairly quick departure from the field, not to be seen again. Certainly unlike it’s cousin the grey fox would have done in the same situation.
I can tell you that I have never called in a thing to red fox pup distress. I’ve called a ton of Grey’s and a few coyotes to grey fox pup. I’ve called coyotes in with Red/Grey fox fights and just Grey fox fights. Kind of curious to know if anyone else sees success with Red fox vocals or distress on a regular basis?
