We started out hunting jackrabbits & Red Fox Fall of 1964. We used sighthounds as we walked harvested fields. kicking up jackrabbits. One day our sighthounds were on a jackrabbits tail. That rabbit ran right over the top of a bedded Red Fox. So during the chase. Some of the dogs continued chasing the jack. A few of the other hounds focused on the fox. Back in 1964, my county had a bounty on Red Fox. Because the Red Fox were viewed as vermin/pest. The Red Fox population of them was very high back in those days. When the hounds killed one. We would take the pair of ears to the county court house for the bounty. Not until around late 60's, to 1970? Was the Red Fox considered a "fur bearer". Thus a legal season on them was established.
Out of all the Red Fox I've seen. 2 were a dark cherry red. 1 was coal black. (Another was a dusky black. Which was running with another red. That was calico in it's body fur coloration). It reminded me of pinto horse in its markings. I have never seen another one like it.
