Rebarrel my target/varmint rifle

AWS

Retired PM Staff
My little Sav 10 that I built 20 yrs ago finally got the rebarrel I've been wanting to do. The old barrel while still accurate, it shot a 50 shot aggregate of .870, all shots counted, brainfarts and flyers included. It has a very large chamber. I neck sized the brass most of the time so it wasn't a big problem but I needed to finally FL size the brass and it was large enough that the body die scraped brass, I tried a number of different FL dies and all the same. Time to fix things.

I ordered a 20" match grade Shilen barrel, NSS precision nut and lug. While waiting I reamed 50 rounds of Lapua brass to fit the .250 neck. Lapua and Starline 222 Rem brass have thick necks and loaded round won't chamber in the tight neck .250/1 loaded, Rem and Win brass are thinner and do load up to .247/8. Now all my brass will work perfectly and will need minimum sizing.

Now that Remage barrels are available they can get rebarreled quickly also.

I love working with Savages, less than an hour to take off the old and install and head space the new. I didn't even have to tear down the bolt as my headspace gauge has a cutout for the ejector.

Now off to the range in the morning.

AWS I have gone that direction myself. Nothing wrong with the nut and it only takes minutes to set up.
I have a 222 myself it's in a Remington 40x, I believe it's a 27 in barrel....I can't remember.
It's been a safe queen for years now.

Range report.

Today, high winds, tumble weed rolling across the range and vibrating the spotting scope enough that it is hard to find bullet hole.

Load data, reamed Lapua brass, 2230 powder 1.5grain and under my hunting load and bulk 52gr Speer Varmint bullets. No load work up, seating depth just to chamber without hitting the lands.

The first 6 rounds to get the new barrel on paper. This is the second 6 rounds out of the new barrel. I'm pleased so far.

Time to order some 52gr FB target bullets. I have Bench.ark and 748 to build some accuracy loads.
