Real world .17 Remington velocities............

Trying to decide between the .17 Remington and .17 Fireball........For those of you that own the .17 Rem in a bolt gun please post your velocities/bullet and barrel length for those velocities....Thanks!

PLOTBOSS

24 inch barrel 25 grain hollow points at about 3850 fps. I could get more fps, but my 17 remingtons are quite accurate at this velocity and I would rather have a longer barrel life than maxed out velocity.

24" ADam

24" 3945fps 27gr golds, coulda pushed faster if wanted, 24.5gr N540. Had a fireball and a few 17rems. The extra velocity of the rem extended point blank range 50 yards or maybe more. One of the reasons it's nice for a calling rifle, imo, just aim and shoot to around 250yds+ if I remember right.
Factory fb ammo didnt get as fast as claimed and dropped off sooner, but likely has a lil better barrel life....
17rem had more whack factor at 300/350 yds also.

22 inch barrel 27gr Kindler 3920fps
22 inch barrel 25gr Nagel 4030fps
22 inch barrel factory load 25gr 3780fps

24 inch barrel factory load 25gr 3870fps
24 inch barrel 25gr Nagel 4102fps

Since you said you were considering the Fireball I will add this

20 inch Barrel 17FB 25gr Nagel @ 3715fps

My rem 700 17 Remington 24" barrel puts out 3850 with 25gr bergers and 4320. I'm not pushing them, I'm keeping my barrel clean.

PLOTBOSS,
I've been hunting Yotes with both the 17 Fireball and the 17 Rem for the last 3 years. I shoot the 30g Kindler Golds in both. I could quote velocities, but I run a short 18" barrel. The 17 Rem is clearly approx. 200 fps faster with the same bullet, but In my experience there is no difference in killing power out to 300yds. Both are instant kills at those ranges. I will say that I also use my rifles for Prairie Dogs, and the Fireball is my pick there. You can't go wrong with either. Brass can be difficult to find for either one at times. If I wanted a dual purpose Yote/PD gun, it would be the Fireball. If Yotes only, the 17 Remington. Good luck.

I once spent six years adding a bathroom to our house.

CZ 527, barrel length 24", Hornady 25 gr. HP, 3921 fps average. I will also add that this combination drops critters (coyote, fox, skunks, possums, raccoons) where they stand. Amazing cartridge and load.
