Range Report - I thought chrome lined barrels aren't supposed to shoot?

Ended up with some pretty good results today with my first batch of handloads for my recently completed AR project.

I was worried due to the performance of factory loads (nothing better than 1"), and made a post about it on here, and ended up with a lot of response saying not to expect much more out of a chrome lined barrel. Today was my first chance to put some handloads through her, and I'm more than pleased.

Gun:

Doublestar lower receiver
DPMS LPK
ERGO grip
ACE Skeleton stock
Timney 3lb trigger
Bushmaster upper receiver
Bushmaster VMatch 20" barrel (chrome lined 1 in 9)
RR handguard
PK Firearms gas block
RR bolt carrier
Badger Ordnance charge handle
Burris PEPR one piece mount
Leupold VXI 4-12x40

Target:

Started at 22gr of Benchmark, and worked up in half grain increments to 24.5. Most everything was .7-1", but 23.5 produced a .544 and a .395 group....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Black Hills brass
WSR primers
55gr V-Max
23.5gr Benchmark

Not exactly a speed demon, I'm guessing it's shooting around 2950 or so.

Yep..I've had two different 223's that loved 23.0 & 23.5 of Benchmark with 55gr Nosler's.Seem's like a pretty mellow load yet if it shoot's well what the heck..

looks like a keeper!!!

I don't think the critters your shootin will know the differance between 2900 fps and 3500fps!! they'll both killem' just as dead, you can just pick what eye to shoot them in with the lighter load!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

NICE GROUPS /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I've said it again and again that I have found that most rifles shoot well at/about 2900ft/sec. No matter the caliber.

Maybe it is just pure dumb luck. Luck or not I shoot most of my rifles at/about 2900ft/sec with reloads.

It also keeps me from burning out barrels.

Yeah that chrome lined myth is a load of crap. Some of the best shooting ARs I have are all chrome lined.

But I'm kind of weird anyway because I like my barrels chrome lined and like my ARs with a flash hider. Both big no-no's (nothing against ARs without of course) lol!

Good shooting BTW. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Good hunting

Thanks guys, I really like this one. Made up 50 more of those loads and shot them up today, and got her dialed in dead nuts. Can't wait to shoot some woodchucks this weekend with it!!!

That's some nice groups. I assume they were shot at 100 yards?

Yep.

I will take an accurate load over a fast load anytime. All mine are at about 2900-3000 fps and print like those above, very small.
