question on bore sighting?

I have used a bore sighter many times with my rifles with good results. But I'm about to bore sight my Encore 50 cal. and I don't have the arbor for the bore sighter so I'm going to have to do it the old fashion way.I know the process but have a few questions(may be stupid ones).
I'm going to pull the breech plug and put the barrel in a rifle holder. The view throuugh the barrel is going to be centered on a "target".Then align the crosshairs until they are centered on the "target".Here are my questions...
1 Distance from end of barrel to target?(doing this inside)
2 Power to set the scope on?
3 Does the center of the target and the center of the barrel have to be the same height off the floor?
I want to get to a good starting point and any help would be appreciated.
thanks,junebugg

Further is better, but a measured distance will get you there with just a little more trouble.

Use a ballistic calculator or tables for your round and figure where the bullet should be at the distance from the muzzle you are using, and with whatever zero range you are looking for. Adjust the crosshairs of the scope above or below your bull accordingly (don't forget to allow for scope mounting height}. That should get you on paper at the range.

Carefully aim and fire a shot at the range. Lock the rifle in your holder aiming the scope at the same spot you aimed at when you fired. Without letting the rifle move at all, adjust the scope so the crosshairs are where the bullet hole is.

Fire another shot if you want to double check, but if you didn't let the rifle move while adjusting the scope, you will be dead on.

I put a scope on my .204 last night boresighted it the old fashion heres the result. The first two shots center just above bulls eye at 50 yards.

I pulled the bolt set the gun in a sand bag looked through bore centered it on a target at couple hundred yard away set the crosshairs to the center of the target and thats it. I've had sporting good stores not do that good with a bore sighter. Good luck Chris,

this ain't scientific, but here is one way that I bore sight my bolt action rifles. I do it in daytime. Turn out all of the lights in my house, pull the shade up on one window and bore sight on my neigbors sewer vent pipe that sticks up out of the roof. Don't tell anyone that I do this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's the way I do all of my bolt actions. I just use one of those half inch floresent target dots on a post behind the house and set the rifle up on the dining room table in my rest pointed at the dot 30 feet outside the house. Or I just do it at the range using my regular target and the red dot.

I'm usually in the wanted point of impact by the third shot.

When it's 22 degrees like this morning I prefer the dining room method. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I do the same thing. It gets me on paper at 100 yds.

Hmmm...... and I thought I invented that one!

......... now I know why I have NO CLOSE NEIGHBORS??????

Seriously,

I did the "eyeball the bore trick" on a 7mm Mag. Custom the other day at 25 yds and it worked real slick!!!!
