I live in PA and i want to get a pistol for hunting deer and bear. what would be the best caliber for this and what gun maker should I look at?

44 should work fine and you can work up from there. If your shots are long you may want to look into a Contender single shot.

44mag is about the most recoil most people can shoot accurately. Even the 44mag is a bit much for many. The 357 shot accuately is better than a 44 shot inaccurately.

Plenty of larger calibers that would be better but less than 1% of hunters could use them accurately.

I have a .480 ruger and the recoil really is not that bad it is a push rather than a snap. If I could do it agian I would get a s&w .460 due to the fact that you can shoot .45 long colt, 454 casull and .460 kinda gives alot of flexiblity for one pistol. I guess it really depends on what ya shoot well.

T/C Contender...7-30 Waters...or any of the other gazillion calibers they make barrels for.
I love my 7-30...dead on @ 200yds right now.

I agree with the 44 mag. I am pretty accurate with mine. It is a 44 mag raging bull. Its got a really nice grip and porting at the end of the 6 inch barrel so the recoil isnt that bad. Although my brother in law complained about shooting it but he is just a nancy boy.

.41 or .44 mag. Some guys use a .357 but there are those who think it's too light for deer. I have never tried it before so I have no first hand knowledge.

If you are using a Contender a 7-30 Waters is "hands down" the choice with better range and accuracy than any of the traditional handgun chamberings.

I'm a diehard fan of the older S&Ws in the .44 magnum, and own two, but if I were choosing one today for hunting, I would seriously be looking at the Ruger.. The overall action appears to be a lot stronger, they are easier to mount a scope if you decide to go that route.

With the .44 mag., You can buy factory ammo or reload your own in a variety of configurations depending upon the desired effect of your shot and target. Meaning light weight bullets with large powder charges to effect impact shock value or the heavier bullets for penetration and wound cavity.

While the same can be said for the .357, I have to agree with Hammer about the .357 being a little light for killing a deer on a consistant basis. While never having shot a bear, I would definately feel better about having the .44 mag. in a face-to-face situation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'd have to recommend the .44 magnum. I hunt deer with a S&W 629 classic with a 6.5 inch barrel. I've got it sighted with a red dot electronic sight. It has a full lug under the barrel so that, along with the sight, provide enough weight to reduce felt recoil to where a girlyman can handle it. I lug it around the woods in an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster. The .44 magnum kills properly hit deer very well. I shoot Winchester 250 grain partition gold premium ammo when deer hunting.

Good hunting y'all.. Coyote 6974

I have a 44 mag Desert Eagle that is just awsome. It's very accurate and I have no problems with shots out to 100 yards. The gas operation and the weight really tames the recoil and makes this gun a pleasure to shoot. I shoot 22.5 grains of AA No.9 with a 230 grain jacketed hollow point and get very consistant clean burning loads with this combo. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I used to be in the archery & firearms business and I've shot just about all of the guns out there at one time or another. It is the best if you can afford it.
