Pig Brig depopulation

One of the lamdowners I work with was having hogs root up close to a house and set up a pig brig trap. Took a couple of weeks to catch them since they were only coming every 4 or 5 days.

Last night they caught 6 in the trap and Judi g by the cell cam pictures I could tell there were at least a couple of good sows in there. So let them know I needed to make some sausage and they said come on and bring you gun.
I shot all 6 with the 300 BO and got video thru the Thermion 2 xg38.

Ended up being 3 boars and 3 sows. The largest was a 209 pound sow. That one went to the landowner to take and have smocked sausage made. I took the other 2 sows ( 150 and about 100). They called another guy who took the 3 boars. The largest boar was 190.

We weight 3 of the hogs to compare actua weights to the heart girth estimated weights. The 209# sow had a heart girth of 40 which comes out to 201 using the heart girth measurement.,The 190 boar had a heart girth of 40.5. The 150# sow had a heart girth of 38 which on the chart is 180.

So the boar was 10 pounds under, the big sow was 8 pounds over, and the smaller sow was 30 pounds under. I am thinking we didn’t pull the tape tight on the smaller sow, which was the first one we did.
We were certain to pull the tape tight on the other 2. Based on past experiences with the heart girth method, I have determined that first you need to pull the tape tight, and you will get within 10 pounds.

This time one was over and one was under. Seems like most times I have done it in the past it was also under by about 10. 10 pounds one way or the other is way closer than you can get just eye balling it.

I guarantee a lot of people would have said that sow was “300 pounds all day long”🤥

I have convinced 2 landowners to buy the Pig Brig traps and they have done well catching hogs.

Whenever I go to one of the traps to kill hogs I do it in the daytime with a suppressed .22 and sub sonic ammo. I just set my tripod about 20 yards from the trap and they get jacked up a little but usually they will stop still long enough to put a round in their ear canal. I start with the largest and work down.

The 300 BO still makes enough noise to cancel out the advantage of trying to shoot them in the dark and the .22 is less likely to damage a $2k plus net. It also makes cleaning the hogs easier since you are using all head shots and not shooting the vitals with a large caliber round.

Good job. Those Pig Brigs have put a hurtin' on the hog numbers here in SC. I have a friend that is a state trapper for NC, I think he has 2-3 of them now.

These weee shot in the daylight, just used the thermal for video, it was suppressed and I had plenty of 300BO ammo.

I didn’t see any damage to the net and didn’t end up hitting any t post. The smallest one has a messed up shoulder but other than that not much damage.

Nothing wrong with using the 300BO. I was just giving my .02 on how to put them down as quietly as possible with less risk of collateral damage to the hogs or the net.

I dropped 5 hogs one night from my pickup truck bed at 15 yards with a suppressed .22 upper running subsonic ammo and that speaks volumes about how quiet it is. I was dropping pigs and the other pigs kept eating on the corn pile. After 5 kills the they finally figured out something was off and they eased off into the woods. At 15 yards you might as well be using a 12 gauge as a subsonic 300BO because after the first shot they are gone.

My best hog pen killing was 12 hogs with 13 shots with .22LR. Only one hog tried to get back up when I started dragging them out and he ruined the 12 for 12, lol. I actually watched 2 guys go through 2 full mags each out of an AR15 on 7 pigs and I eventually had to finish them off with a .22 revolver. Ear hole or 1” above the line between the eyes will drop them like a sledgehammer.

' subsonic 300BO because after the first shot they are gone.' Nope. Shot a 5 hogs, supersonic BO, hogs didn't leave till the corn was gone.
