I an not nor have I ever used a lathe. I did repair lots of them when I was a repair tech for our school district. Always found it interesting though and wanted to do it someday.
Anyways, found this short video and found it interesting and amazed at how effortlessly this guy worked.
 
I don’t think I can get interested in that. It’s all I can do to set up and do what I do lol.

That always drives me nuts watching guys effortlessly take a massive bite of the wood on every pass and then end up perfect in the end. Even in my most practiced designs if I try that I end up with chipped out scraps.
As for the whistle I would guess it's like everything else that looks easy.
What takes him 1 min would take me 5 hours and 30 tries to get any sound at all haha
