Not a creature was stirring!

We’ve been in a deep freeze pattern for a bit and things warmed up a bit yesterday. Temps were dropping again as evening progressed back into the 20’s and winds picked up. Tried a couple sets last night with my brother and it was dead!. Might have been the curse of the east wind, but I’ve never let that keep me home.

Made 2 sets with no responses or sightings. No fox showed up for filler entertainment. No rabbits spotted or field mice. Hilight of the night was when we heard an owl across the road make a sound, and one answer back from within the woods in front of us.

There wasn’t a deer to be found which was really the thing that got me to call it quits. We drove and scanned fields that always have high deer numbers and nothing. Not 1 deer!

Looks like warmer rainy conditions for the next few days at least. Gotta say, the weather has been garbage for a lot of this season. November and December are tough months for me to get out calling, so it hasn’t been a huge problem for me. January through March is when I get out the most. Hoping things turn around.

we saw deer everywhere last night. had a southeast wind and a little rain here and there but mostly a heavy mist.

saw two coyotes that basically ignored us, heard a truck hit a deer, they were driving pretty fast went out of sight and we heard the "THUD" sounded like a good dead center hit. after we were done at that set we checked the road and found some auto parts but no deer.

It was really surprising that we didn't see a deer. They're out there in some of the worst conditions I've ever sat through on stand or at least there and just bedded. Some fields have up to 20+ deer regularly. Not a one! I told my brother that at some point throughout the night things would probably turn on. He's not much of a predator hunter and was over it. He doesn't torture himself like me! Lol... And he was driving. I considered heading back out when he dropped me off, but I was pretty shot from a rough day yesterday and that was that. We're covered in ice this morning but it should melt off as the temps rise.

I get a lot more responses before and after really cold spells. It makes sense to me that they don't want to be out in bad weather. They're gonna be hungry afterwards so give it a go when things warm up a bit.

Man it’s been unreasonably warm weather out here in ND/SD too. Winds out of the south and east as well. Makes calling tough. I miss the freezing temps.

we are currently hunting with handicaps. i rolled both ankles during deer season and decided last night was worth a test run. not a good idea !

i am back to waddling around like a duck again after walking thru muddy cut corn fields also went up and down some hills / rolling terrain. hurts to walk or stand for any length of time.

my partner is dealing with some issues too. i am at home resting my ankles.

he is back out trying to kill some coyotes. :)
