Nikon Prostaff 5

Hey guys. Just looking for some opinions on this scope in a 2.5x10x40 with the BDC reticle. I have been looking for a scope to put on another AR I recently picked up and this one caught my eye for its positive reviews and good price point. Any pros or cons on this scope are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have never owned the Prostaff 5 scope, but have had a Monarch with the BDC reticle. Personally, I don't particularly like Nikon's BDC reticle, as it is just too cluttered for my liking. I have it on my deer rifle and it is fine in that role. However, I would not use that reticle on a dedicated predator gun. I would opt for the nikoplex before the bdc in that circumstance. That's just my opinion.

I just was in the same position and ended up with the vortex diamondback hp 3-12. The vortex was actually cheaper because of the sale at cabelas 229.00. I also fealt the glass was a bit crisper. But the Nikon pro staff 5 was still nice. Both will serve you fine

I put a Prostaff 5 2.5X10X40 on a rifle several months ago, and though I've not used it all that much, it seems to be a very nice scope. I do not have the BDC reticle on mine.

We own 2 of the models you are asking about, the 2.5-10x40. Both are mounted on 22WMR rifles and they are excellent scopes. I also own 3 other ProStaff 5 models in higher powers. The ProStaff 5 is essentially the same scope as the now discontinued BuckMaster line. They are great scopes, always hold zero, and are extremely reliable. In over 15 years of owning Nikon scopes I have never had an issue with any of them.

Thanks for the input. I currently have a vortex diamondback 4-12-40 on a rifle and like it real well, it is not the hp model nor does it have an ao. Have also been considering another vortex in the hp like bigtommy spoke of or maybe a Burris fulfieild 2, or possibly the leupold vx2. This rifle will mostly be shot under 200 yards for coyotes and some paper. Thanks again for the great responses.

I think I may have a good suggestion for you. Nikoon currently has a PROMO going on that includes the M-223 2-8x32 BDC and Nikonplex with Rapid Action Turret. Under $300. Pretty good deal. You get MONARCH glass and a lower profile scope then the PROSTAFF 5 2.5-10. You give up a little in magnification but this scope will still let you hot a coyote at 600 yards. The Rapid action turret is a custom reticle built around the .223, 55 gr bullet at 3240 fps. Just range your target and dial the distance. When you zero at 100 yards, pull up on turret and turn to 100 when you are sighted in and now you are good to go.

I have Nikon, Redfield and Luepold scopes on some of my rifles.
No complaints on any of these.
I recently looked at the Vortex offerings . To my eye the Prostaff 5 was brighter and Clearer all the way to the edges of The glass than that of the Vortex.
I ended up ordering a refurbished prostaff 7 2.5-10x 42 with a 30mm. Tube sight unseen based on my hands on comparison of the Vortex, Nikon and Redfield scopes in a local shop. For my money the Nikons are about the best at the price.$280 with rings. Your mileage may vary.
Im going to mount this glass on My new Bmag

Have that same scope on a 243 AR10, which doesn't get much air time.
My other scopes are Burris BDC, and I like the Burris line type hash marks vs Nikon circles.
Otherwise, it is very clear and a perfect zoom range for yotes and mid-range target work.
If you have a good deal on it, go for it !

I have a prostaff 5 on my howa axiom 22-250 and really like it. It take a lot of range time to learn your hashes because they wil be different for every load and gun but once figured out they work great.

I have 3 PS 5 3.5-14 scopes, but they are all mildot as I hate those BDC reticles.
I feel they are a good buy for the $$ and have never had issues with Nikons in the years Ive been abusing them in all weather.

I own 3 of the prostaff 5 models. 2.5/10 with the nikoplex reticle. I think it is more clear than my Leopold vx II. I wish they were lighter in weight like the luppys. I would recommend them and I plan on buying 2 more when a sale comes up.
