New Catahoula pup, where do I start?

Hey folks!

Wondering if anyone could throw some tips or pointers my way?

I just secured a Catahoula pup, and want to train it for decoying coyotes…….maybe hunt other game too……coons, trail wounded deer, etc.

I got the bases covered on general obedience training, curious if anyone here has had experience with a Catahoula hunting dog(I’ve had one before but he was alot of mutt and not a hunting dog)

Have you decoyed coyotes with a Catahoula?

Hunted coons?

Hogs?

Can they be multi game hunting dogs?

Obviously if I do my part?

Basically, tell me about your Catahoula experiences

Personally, I don't think I would try to train a dog for multiple species. What are you going to do, look at him and say "Ok Buddy, we are hunting pigs today"?

Around here people use Catahoulas mainly for hog dogs.

I have a cat/aussie mix that loves playing tag with coyotes she is older now but man we used to have a ball killing coyotes together. Basic obedience for sure, collar train your pup so it returns on the beep. I used to let her chase rabbits when she was a pup so she kinda learned to hunt on movement. Probably not the right way to do it but it worked for her. I spent a lot of time with her in the field and you will not kill as many coyotes the first couple years while the pup is figuring out the game but it will either figure it out and be all about it or they won’t want anything to do with them. I had one that got her ass kicked a few times and that was enough for her and she stopped playing the game so I got rid of her. Start training them young with guns so they get used to the gun shot. My dog has a terrible nose compared to others so I never tried hunting anything but coyotes with her. You will have a blast with your pup in the field, some of my favorite memories in the desert were with her. Now she is retired and now she loves backpacking and fishing. Best of luck and be patient

Here are some pics of ol copper dog in action. I used to get some sweet video during the summer months but got tired of carrying everything around. Decoying coyotes is the most fun you can have besides bugling bulls in September.

I am far from an expert at this game though. There are way way way more experienced guys on this forum than myself. I’m a total rookie and amateur when it comes to decoying I just enjoy seeing the dogs work and seeing the coyotes act different it’s a hoot. But there are guys who use dogs for a living and they are the true experts when it comes to dogs and they have a very high standard for dogs.
