thought u are supposed to hunt coyotes facing the wind coming from where coyotes are located . tape with sceery howler said to look down wind . hunting by myself always set up downwind with decoy and electronic caller . then go within sight farther downwind and a little to one side hoping coyote would come in to caller and decoy . thanks for any help.

I think guys have success either way. These days I prefer to hunt with a cross wind. Coyotes will instinctively try and get downwind of the caller. They want to verify with their nose what their ears are hearing. You want to use that to your advantage when calling. Give them an opportunity to use their instincts but set yourself up to where you can see them coming and get a shot. Hope this helps.

Crosswind preferred in most cases with caller out and upwind of my location with good view of downwind.

Reasoning is that the coyote will try to get downwind of sound. With caller upwind of you, hopefully the coyote will be closer to you when it tries to investigate the sounds.

Setting up directly downwind of the caller can work if there’s little or no chance that a coyote can come from behind you. I feel it reduces your chances a bit of success because you’re taking away the coyote’s ability to investigate the sound. Sometimes there’s no other option, so I say go for it.

thanks .Greatful for help . Study all u guys send . sometimes make drawings of situations .[ wife says i need help thinking good reason want to learn coyote habits ] thanks again!!!

Setting up with the wind in your face can be a crapshoot as far as results. I hunted with a partner at one time and we would sit back to back and call with the wind in my face, sometimes they showed up between me and the caller, sometimes circling 200 yards out and one time jumped over my partners legs. You never know how big the circle will be. You can limit them with some type of backing, hiway, open field, pond etc.

I find as others do, cross winds work best for me.

Even down wind calling can work if you can be sure and get a shot before they cross into you scent cone.

Man... I remember back in the Posse Country days, before it got hijacked into becoming PM. My friend Scott Huber and Ed Sceery went back and forth on this subject for what seemed like forever. Page after page after page. I don't think anyone changed their mind.

When I first started, I always set up downwind from the caller and always called directly into the wind. I've gravitated more to calling with a crosswind whenever possible. Found it gets them to come in from the left or right of me rather than from behind.

I believe the idea behind facing downwind while calling is that you are calling to animals more to your left or right and watching for them to circle to the downwind.

I use all wind direction like mentioned, I think the stand will dictate the wind direction, I'm not going to turn down a stand if there is a wind that I can work with.. I do like to know which way the wind is blowing as it helps me decide what roads to hunt and layout my calling circuit for the day. If there is an east/west wind I'm not going to target north/south roads because the wind is either in your face or on your back. That said you can if the stand is a good one, hook into it and give yourself a crosswind.

If possible we always try to set up with a crosswind but each stand location can be different with terrain and cover.great info from AWS up above.that's pretty much how we set out night/up.
