Mossberg 535 ATS vs. 835 Ulti-Mag?

If anyone owns either of these models.
I would like to know any of the pros and cons of them.
Also what do they mean by "Over-bored Barrel" with the 835?
And what is the advantage or disadvantage of a ported choke?

Thanks,
Wally

I have a Mossberg 835 ultimag and love it. What they mean by the Over Bored Barrel is that it has holes drilled into the end of the barrel so when you shoot it some of the gas gets pushed out the top to keep the muzzle from rising.

I also have the 835 ultimag and love it...have not had any problems. The holes in the end of the barrel is a ported barrel to relive the gases. An over bored barrel is that this barrel is bored out to 10 gage and then necked down to a 12 gage at the end of the barrel. I guess it helps the pattern of the shot.

Exactly. I have an 835 as well and love it.

The 535 is the utilitarian version chambered in 12 gauge 3.5 inch shells of Mossbergs 500. The 835 is the ported overbored gun designed around the 3.5 inch 12 gauge shell. Along with being ported they also can be had in factory camo. They come tapped for scope bases and the turkey model has fire sights on it.

Mine wears an Aimpoint red dot sight with a one minute dot. It's accurate on turkeys out to 60 yards and a pleasure to shoot. I used a Rem 870 3 inch and then the 3.5 inch Special for a couple of years and the Mossberg is much easier to shoot.

Here's mine.

i have a 535 with the turkey barrel and the field barrel. it is a good truck gun or a gun for general purpose. if you hunt birds this gun may disapoint you due to the typical cheapness of a mossberg. it occasionally jams with 3.5 in shells or the action pops open after firing. i have owned several mossbergs and they all seem to have this problem. i however think for 275 bucks its hard to find a shotgun that comes with two barrels for that price and if it gets banged around who cares.

Thanks for the response guys.
I was particular impressed with the different choices of camouflage patterns they offer. I am interested in the Grand Slam Turkey series with 20"bbl in the 835. And or the Turkey series with 22"bbl in the 535.

I will be using it for hunting coyote sized predators at night, plus squirrels and small game at other times. Would the the shorter barrels be sufficient for my type of hunting needs?

I also wanted to top it with a red dot aim-point device such as you guys have in your pics. How well would the aim-point perform for night shooting under a red light?

835 has a much heavier frame of a 10ga.
535 is a stretched 500...same frame as 500 and some say not as capable at handling 3.5" shells and felt recoil/muzzle rise.
I own a 535 and love it. I upgraded to a limbsaver recoil pad and have 0 complaints. Its very light and a dream to carry in the field or make fast shots. And it will accept almost any accessory for a 500. Cant be beat for the $$.

I have the 835 deer/turkey combo in MO camo. With the right choke's/loads it patterns great for any critter you want to hunt. The 24" barrel's not to shabby for wing shooting either.I do a fair amount of grouse hunting mostly in cover. For that the shorter barrel is an advantage.

I own both in various models. the 535 uses standard invector tubes, i.e Browning, Mossberg, Win choke etc. The 835 is heavier, great gun for short carrying into a duck and goose blind but heavy as a 10 gauge. Over bored so better patterns, the 535 kicks harder with 3 1/2 in loads because of the tighter bore and lighter weight. After shooting and hunting with both for years I really like the 535, even though they had issues with feeding for awhile but an easy fix if you know guns. The nice thing about the 535 is that in a pinch ANY 12 gauge ammo will safely go down the pipe. The 835 doesn't digest 12 ga slugs because of the 10 gauge bore, rattle down the bore unless you shoot the slug barrel which is a standard 12 bore on the 835. I like guns that will eat any candy and the 535 is that gun without costing stupid money, and made in the USA. I have owned 870 Super Mags, 1187 Super Mags and all the others and the pump 535 has proven itself and never failed even in minus 40 degree weather with late season Canadas here in the far North.
