So my state is outlawing bait (including salt) and deer urine products this year. People are acting like its the end of the world, and they might as well throw their trail cams away.
Now i do use salt in front of some cams, and its a great attractant in the early season, helps get lots of pics, but i get tons of pics just by putting cams in the right places, with no attractant.
Ive also found pretty good success getting mature bucks to show up at mock scrapes i make. And with salt being banned this year, i intend to increase the number of mock scrapes i make for cams.
So heres how i do it. I have read a lot of stuff about guys making it a big ritual with all kindsof scent control voodoo, but. . This has been my method, and its worked quite well.
I kick up the ground to bare dirt with my stinky old boot under a likely looking licking branch in a likely looking spot. I then piss in the dirt i just kicked up. Then i grab the licking branch with my bare hand and dip the tips into a bottle of bucknip. Thats it. No trying to hide my scent, no wearing gloves. No fancy deer urine or gland stuff. Use my own piss. And the bucks come. It works.
So, anybody else as casual about it as i am? Have you seen success with it? If not what is your program?
Ive seen enough good results doing it cheap n dirty that i dont intend to change a thing. My own piss aint 10 bucks per ounce.
 
Some guy had a recipe for making your own “scrape juice” I don’t remember exactly what all the ingredients were but it involved sliced apples in a milk jug and you fill it up. Start in January and go until you get it about 3/4 full…put in a place out of the sun and pop the cap once a week. By July it apparently will attract every buck that walks by.

I’ve never made a mock scrape, but do find community scrapes they keep open all year and monitor those. Maybe not the best for just bucks because every deer, coyote, cat, fox, etc will visit them.
 
Watching coyotes on my trail cams, I pee where they pee and then it's like a contest to see who can be the last one there. Bet it works for deer also. Haven't tried it yet, just hunt where the acorns are. Works pretty good.
 
So im not the only guy that makes mock scrapes with my own piss. Friend of mine pays for cold packed fresh overnight shipping of deer piss. Im like hey, heres pics of bucks working scrapes i made with my own. He cant believe it.
 
Ive had multiple videos of a female cougar that liked peeing right in the middle of a trail on my property, same spot every time. And lots of deer walking by shortly after, not acting alarmed at all
 
wanna try something neat ? and it works too.

find a farmer that will let you collect urine from a cow in heat....gallons at a time. save money and kill bucks.
 
I'm trying the hemp rope gland station setup this year. Put one out last winter. Have 2 more to place, I placed a scent wafer on the limb that the rope is attached to. Once bucks start using it no products at all should be needed (they leave the scnt).I guess when I put the cameras on them I know for sure. Water works vey well during dry periods for camera action. And I think clean fresh water has very little risk of disease transmission.

I like using wild grape vine better. Just cut off a 3' section or so and tie it to a rope from the branch above the scrape. I think bucks respond to it a little better than the rope cause there's some resistance there when they rub their forehead on it. Also, the rope one's I've used in the past deteriorated after several years.
 
I dont put cameras on scrapes but i do piss in the ones around my stands. I heard it is only a bad idea if you drink a lot of coffee. I drink a lot of coffee and they still come back and work the ones i piss in
