Mixed Friday Night

I decided to go out last night at the last minute. Had a light SW wind and went to the west side of the property with a field in mind and small thick planted pines to the West of it. Due to thick fog, I stopped short and set the caller near a wet weather hole with a harrowed up section leading to the field. To my South and East are plantation style pines with a dip and upwards slope; this is more Wiregrass than broomsedge. Now why is that important? When we got that snow a couple weeks ago it laid that Wiregrass down for good.
Since my normal calling hasn’t worked this was an experimental trip, lol. I’m running an Icotec Outlaw+ and volume is 1-10 with 10 being the highest of course. I decided to start with prey sounds on 5 vs blaring it out.
I wasn’t 3 minutes in when I saw this cat coming from the SE hill side. Still testing the Nosler Varmageddons and they did a number on this cat.

I continued calling until the wind switched and packed it up and moved to another location.
This stand had me about middle of the South part of the property. I did the same thing here except no immediate takers or responses. I’m scanning and notice something that isn’t a deer. I get on the scope and see a pig moving South about 300yds away.
I snatched the rifle off the tripod and took off trying to intercept it. I keep checking the wind and spot not one pig, but an entire sounder of three large hogs and about half a dozen piglets.
I get in the same feed trail they’re on and sneak down less than 100yds. For some stupid reason I decide to sit and shoot for stability. I was “thinking” at the shot some would run down the trail.
I decided to not take a DRT shot because I wanted to see what the Noslers would do. I ended up shooting lower and forward than normal and videoed the track job, but they did the trick with a blood trail an old man could follow, lol. There ain’t much in this world that scares me, but a possible wounded hog does, lol!! Needless to say, she was dead from serious blood loss. Now after watching the video you’ll ask why I didn’t shoot the other pig after I got up? Well, I thought it was my pig that was dead on its feet. I’ve found if I shoot at a sounder and be still and quiet, they sometimes come back and start feeding again. This didn’t happen this time, lol.

I went back today and baited up the area they were in and stuck a camera up to see if they come back. That’s 3 times I’ve been back there and spotted pigs while going to call for coyotes. The other two times I spotted them before ever calling, lol.

Yeah, after the hog I thought of making another stand but the fog had really set in by then and figured there’d be better nights to come.
I think our hunting along with my trapping will pick up some with cooler weather. We went from record snow and freezing temps to 80’s in a weeks time, lol.
