Missed a deal....or did I?

I went to a little local show today looking for odds and ends. Ended up buying a couple of sets of ear rings for the wife. LOL! There was a guy walking around with two shotguns and a Remington 760 in 30-06. Man it was ugly. Someone tried their hand at checkering using a hacksaw I think. He was asking $300 for it and wouldn't budge. I looked at it two different times as well as probably most people in the show did. I knew there was no repairing the "checkering job" that someone did and a new stock was the only repair to bring the rifle back to somewhat good condition. I ended up walking away but part of me thinks it might have been worth the money and effort to repair the old war horse. I enjoy "projects" if I can keep from getting over my head in costs. My last project was an FN 98 Mauser. After a week of sanding and wood work it turned into a beautiful piece of walnut and the finish is as smooth as a piece of glass. An after market barrel in 6.5x55, not sure what brand, bed the action and floated the barrel and replaced the trigger with a Timney. It shoots good and looks even better. I'm kinda proud of the way it turned out.

I did a little researching and the older 760's in good shape bring decent money, on the internet. It would have been one just to flip as I have very little use for an 06'. And I have to many "hunting" rifles now. But like I was saying, I like projects and ones I can do without the cost/help from a gunsmith. The show was within blocks from my house so I went back to see if the guy might still be there but rumor has it a young guy bought the rifle. So, I guess it doesn't matter now and I still have my money.

I have a pristine one in 35 Rem stored in my BinLs safe in case I get around to flying up for a deer hunt. My Ex has a 270 that thought it was varmint rifle. I watched her drop a deer at 400 yards off the deck of our house.

I always thought having JES Reboring open a 30-06 to 35 Whelen and turning it into a carbine would have been a great deer hunting rifle, ended up reboring a 721 to 35W. Kills deer just fine.

Remington chambered the 7600 in 35 Whelen. They are out there. I always thought a 7600 20" barrelled 358 Winchester would be a great mixed-cover rifle.
