Today I acquired a Mauser 98a 8mm from my dad that his dad had brought back home from WW2. He passed when my dad was young so I was more than pleased to receive this. I know little to nothing about them, just looking for any good general info or need to know model specific info about them. One specific question I have is, can I put it back to the pre sporterized version and what all parts would I need?

Congrats on a nice piece there. I can't help a lot with the specific models, but it hasn't really been molested much at all, just the stock from what I can tell. Usually the bolt handle will be cut off with a new down swept one put on, and receiver drilled and tapped for bases, new barrel installed at a minimum.

I believe your stock is cut off @ lower barrel band, but not sure. If so, it would appear that you need a stock, upper hand guard and two barrel bands. This is a WWII 98. Not sure of the different series, but only obvious difference is straight bolt handle which was used on a lot of Mausers, so yours is probably original. Unlike modern military rifles, the Mausers usually serial numbered major parts, such as bolts, trigger guards, etc.

If I were to restore, I'd check NUMRICH ARMS and Old Sarge's Drop Zone – Military Surplus Resource first for parts availability.
