Botched a double… Ended up with one. Haven’t gotten out much in a couple weeks and was itching to go. We had a few hours of rain this afternoon that stopped around 7:00 or so. Had a southeast wind that would work for 2 properties that aren’t buried in standing corn, so I loaded up and headed out. I got to the property and started in when the farmer told me he had cows in the lower east pasture. Okay, change of plans as that’s where I was going to setup. Now I need to hike an extra 500 yards uphill to get to the upper east pasture. I would, and do hunt around cows all the time, but for some reason, this guys dairy cows are ridiculously inquisitive and constantly screw up my hunts! I’m slogging up the muddy tractor road between east and west pastures and scan a coyote mousing amidst all the cows in the pasture. Probably 165 yards and I’ve only got one possible safe shot. It gets there but a roll in the field blocked much of the kill zone. I tried the shot and clipped the lip of the roll. I think I hit it with something but it didn’t look like it was slowing down any as it headed into a huge ravine on the east side of the pasture.
300 yards later I find myself in the upper east pasture. No cows but several curious deer. Upper east is tighter with timber on both east and west sides and a big roll or crown heading to the south. There’s about 400 yards of field south of me, but I’m only seeing less than 100 yards looking south because of the crown of the hill. The field is maybe 100 yards wide east to west. I set caller about 50 yards up and 50 yards towards the center of the field at about my 10 o’clock with the wind coming from the caller to me. A bit tight, but doable. I ran a series of Foxpro long howls 1,2. & 3 and within a minute a coyote charges in from the southwest at about my 2:00 headed straight to the call. I lip squeaked and stopped it 10 yards from the caller and dumped it at about 60 yards. Healthy male. Decent size. Teeth not worn too bad so maybe a couple years old.
