Weekend hours seem longer than regular work day hours.
We were scheduled to hunt all day, but didn’t have to be there until 0730. I’m the type of person that can’t stand to have “free” time and not make use of it so I got up at 0500 to go make a stand or two on the property before heading in to get ready for the morning hunt.
It misted most of the previous day and we had a front roll through last night and the rain was supposed to be over.
I was on the property and set up by 0535 and it was still misting and a brisk NW wind. I chose an “easy” stand where I’m running a few traps. I’d already taken one coyote, two bobkitty’s, and seven fox, but seeing how this seems to be a natural travel/hunting area I decided to give it a try.
Based on where it is I just went with prey sounds, mainly rabbit. I’m not sure how many I went through before the bobkitty showed, but I was done with cottontail sounds and had went to jackrabbit.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time to hit record because frankly, he scared me when he came out, lol.
W/NW wind at about 15mph and I was facing West. Small pines maybe 30-40yds wide on either side of me there’s a swamp/bottom to the north and plantation pines with plenty of brush to the South. This stand of pines are leased to a pine straw guy so no understory at all.
I only had the call about 30-40yds down the road but next to a pine. This cat came out dead north of me and was making a beeline to the caller which was in the middle of a long dying jackrabbit sound.
I dropped the scanner around my neck and immediately got on the gun and he was about 10ft from the caller in an about to pounce position. Basically a chip shot and had to get creative on posing for the pic. Tiny entrance hole that you have to hunt for to find and gigantic exit hole that you really have to get creative for a pic. I knew it was going to be bad when watching the impact through the thermal and parts flying everywhere.
Sorry for no video…didn’t expect him to pop out from where he did and dang sure didn’t expect him to be moving that fast.
I made a move after that but only used some coyote howls trying to see if I could get a response. I probably couldn’t have heard anything if one did respond, that wind was blowing.
We did have a decent morning hunt and a better afternoon hunt. The group this morning killed 6 and the afternoon group killed 9. Great day but in one word…raw! Cold all day even after the sun broke out the last hour of the hunt.
I’m about to head to bed and will probably get up early again to try another area and see what might respond! Only a half day hunt tomorrow!!
