My friend bought one back in May 2010, one of the best Leupolds I've ever seen. He has the Long Range with varmint reticle model which doesn't have the target turrets. How good is it? I'm selling off one of my BR Leupolds to get one.
To much power? I use 6x for hunting coyotes on my VX2 6x18 and find that it's good. Like you my shooting starts at 100 yards.
All my other varmint hunting Leupolds are fixed power 24x, I swore I'd never see a variable on any of my varmint rigs. Guess I was wrong.

Jeremy,,My only concern, in on the size of the Objective bell and the distance it will put the scope above the center of the bore...
Even shooting an AR at longer ranges, I prefer a 42mm objective as it allows me to keep the scope as low as possible and therefore less worry about the parallax offset.. I know the scope in question has their crescent cutout which lowers the scope somewhat...
I use a Sightron 4-14x-42mm Mil-Dot on my long range .204 as I don't usually have time for turning knobs and the mil-dots allow me to adjust any needed hold-over/windage more rapidly and I don't experience a lot of mirage if it exists as it is sometime wont to do out in the 'flatlands'...I know, the Flint Hills are not really flat, but the amount of rocks tend to magnify the sun's heat a little more..
My higher power (18x-32x) scopes usually wind up getting turned down to less than 18x as the sun heats up..just due to the mirage factor...
Just my thoughts..As always, it's your money and ultimately your decision..

That's the beauty of the vx3-L. Has the cutout in the objective to allow low mounting, keeping the ocular bell at a reasonable height. Does the one you'e looking at have a side focus? I would be more comfortable getting the 4.5-14 model with the side focus. Easier at close range. I don't care for the fixed parallax model (no side focus). They are all very good in low light conditions.

I have one on my long range AR.It's a nice scope,has the most positive clicks i have ever seen on a scope,great glass,tracks perfectly too.
