Michigan's coyote season ends April 15th, which we are quickly approaching. My partner and I decided to go out this last Thursday (4/3). We made three stands and managed to get one on the last stand.
First Stand: Several months ago we were cruising around and stopped at public hunting spot. My partner ended up spotting a pair out in the field but they were gone before I got my gun up. We decided to call this spot in hopes of seeing something. We parked several hundred yards from our spot and walked down the dirt road to set up in a line of pines. We called and saw lots of rabbits and an owl that was on the hunt, nothing else.
Second stand: We found another great public spot in an agriculture field surrounded by woods on three sides. Wind was from the west and we would be shooting north to south. We had really high hopes for this spot once we set up but only called in a rabbit. It was a picture perfect stand, but looking back maybe others had also found its potential.
Third stand: This was our last stand for the night and things went quick. We again parked a bit away and walked to our location. Wind from the west and shooting north to south. We split up as there is small line of trees that split this field north to south. He took the east side and I took the west side. I set the call along the tree line on my side trying to obscure the call a bit and having the coyotes look for it. We got in place and I fired up a "coyote locator" call on the X24. The caller hadn't finished but a few howls when my partner shot followed up by a second within a few seconds. The hunt was over within 1 minute of starting. I let out a few distress call but nothing else came. I called it after 10 more minutes. Here she is, an unbred small female. Probably last year's pup.
Edit: I'm trying to get the video attached.
