It’s a calm 44 degree day here in south central ND. I’ve been waiting all fall and winter for one of these days because that can only mean one thing; I’m taking my son hunting.
Jax is 3 1/2 years old with a healthy obsession for guns and hunting. It’s just been to cold this winter to get him out with me.
Well this morning I got him loaded up into my big pack and hiked into some badlands cuts and bowls. I’ve been saving this spot all winter and it was covered up in coyote crap. We heard coyotes going off as soon as we got out of the truck but they were a long ways into the cuts.
We blanked the first stand but could hear them talking over the ridge. So we made a move and got into the next bowl with them. Surprisingly, we got in quiet but the coyotes just shut down. I switched to some partridge distress late into the stand and saw some magpies landing on trees down wind of us. Luckily we were at the edge of a cliff and up a lot higher than them. Soon enough I spotted a coyote pop over the ridge with them but it looked a little on edge. Ranged it right at 306 yards and folded him with the 6 creed.
Immediately played some MFK Extreme Violence for a couple minutes and had three hard chargers coming in straight in front of us. I barely got the lead coyote stopped before it got under us. Ended up folding that one at 164 yards. We couldn’t get a shot at the other two but I’ll take the double all day.
The sun came out after that and things quieted down. Did a few more stands but one got buggered up by a low flying helicopter. Sucked because I packed us about a 1/2 mile into that stand too. Jax slept that stand away anyways.
Regardless, today was one for the books. Jax was pumped all day and got to shoot the gun a bit. He also got a chance to break in the drag he won in last months hunter of the month contest too.
