It wasn’t all me! (Double)

I went out last night and tried Cal’s new calls I loaded onto my FP X2s. I got setup and played Lonesome Me. Not kidding, I got an immediate response from a familiar friend on this property. Been dealing with this coyote for 3 or 4 seasons and know it well. Always just barks! Never howls. Always stays out of sight. From the opposite side of a hedgerow it was going through its normal routine. But I caught a flash of its partner about 200 out skirting around an island of trees. While jabberjaw was barking, this one was curious about who was on its turf! It was slowly working its way towards me but was acting nervous so at 150 I tried a straight on shot. I mean really tried because I have been shooting like a pile! Locked in, breathing was good, squeeze felt great. Trigger broke and coyote ran off unscathed!

Jabberjaw went quiet. Disgusted, I just sat quietly for a few minutes. Then I heard the barking start from inside the woodline across a crop field to my left. I moved my tripod and rifle to a break in the hedgerow so I could watch that field and played a series of Cal’s Where You At. It went nuts with the barking. I went quiet. Couple minutes later it’s coming across the field trying to get downwind. I lip squeak at 75 yards and really concentrate again. I hear a bullet hit, it turns and runs back to woods. No recovery. I’m super discouraged and go home after searching for an hour. I went to the range after work today. To work on my head and my shooting. My rifle was hitting 4.5” right and 3.5” low! My head almost exploded! I checked my profiles against what I have logged on my phone. Scope was at 00!!! All 3 profiles were zeroed out. I reset them to my previous X and Y coordinates and right back to good.

I went out tonight to a different spot, ran Lonesome Me and got an immediate response from a couple hundred yards away. Went into Where You At and the pair got really worked up. I went quiet and several minutes later I see them on the hill at the far end of a horse paddock. I gave them a little Wife Beater and they came trotting around the backside of the paddock. When they cleared the fence, I dropped the lead one at 100, and when the second one hesitated, I dropped it at 125. I guess it really helps to have your rifle zeroed!

I don’t know if my Rix Leap 3 zeroed out with a firmware update or what? The thing has been really solid over several updates. Definitely will be keeping an eye on profiles from now on!

Great job, but shits going to happen when you take things for granted.
I always make sure my scopes profiles are set with the caliber in the yardage setting so I know it's on the correct profile.
My L3 has been a great scope too.
Two weekends left in the season, so now that the rifle is confirmed sighted in don't do any updates till the seasons over !!!!!!!!

I’m just making an assumption on the update, but I don’t know how else that could have happened? Something happened, and believe me, I’m kicking myself in the ass for not figuring it out sooner! Anyone that knows me will tell you that I’m about as anal retentive as you’ll ever meet! Lol… I don’t take this stuff lightly!

Now that I have educated just about every coyote in my area for two weeks, we’ll see what happens I definitely left some for seed!

Weird how the scope was off! If you can think back to any situation where it could have gotten knocked or had unnoticed pressure put on the scope! I accidently dropped my rifle mid winter this year (not from a high distance) and the scope took a bit of a knock, that night called a coyote in about 275 yrds, shot and missed, so the next day I went off to the range. Turned out I just suck as shooting, the gun was fine  but better safe then sorry moving forward, it was a good excuse to by a new scope I bought a Leupold 7-35x56 M5 :p I still miss just as good, but now with class......

Wow! Had something similar happen except somehow I’d switched to a different profile. Only knew that because I use different reticles for each profile. I’d stalked in on a pig and turned scope on, looked through it and knew that wasn’t the reticle I’d picked. Looked at the X/Y and of course they were at 0. I then realized I was on C and not A. Scrolled to A and checked the X/Y and knew I was back in business. I have no clue when or how I’d swapped profiles, but definitely did at some point.
Oh yeah, the pig died.

Well RSG… This was nothing to do with knocking it off. It’s an electronics thing where it was somehow at factory zero settings?

I’m pretty old school. I knew when I got back after them my head was a bit askew. I know I shot and missed a couple because of rushing, mashing the trigger etc. But I also know I can shoot when my head is right, but I kept missing and wounding! That was sending my head deeper into panic mode I guess. History has always told me that it was me, and not the gun, so that’s where my thoughts were at. Well there I go thinking again! Lol… Why I never checked my profiles is beyond me?

Nice shooting! A double, I’ve only done that once and that was because #2 was too stupid to run at the gunshot. Should have left that one in the gene pool because the ones that are left are pretty smart.

I’ve had similar scope issues when I was using an ATN X-Sight 5. The thing is plagued with glitches where it will lock up if you try and use certain functions. To “un-freeze” it you have to re-boot it. Unbeknownst to me at the time, when you re-boot you lose your zero. I have since learned to save the profile but it's still a royal pain and still no firmware updates. I switched to AGM digital night vision and the Spectrum works great.

😂 Well, every cloud has a silver lining, Bob. Glad you got 'er back on track now.

Glad you’re back on the board! Great report on the other Cal sounds too.
I can yap all day about my shortcomings and shooting problems if people want, but Cal’s sounds are for real, the bright point here! They are legitimate killer sounds. 3 or 4 years of Jabberjaw running it’s mouth and never committing. Cal’s “Where you at” got that sucker to show itself! And after a shot was fired! I feel horrible that I just wounded it! I really wanted to lay hands on that joker. Always said I would get the skull done.

Finish strong and set the tone for fall.
I once made a plan that took 6 months to get conditions right to kill a resident yapper. When I finally got her, calling improved in that spot dramatically.
WTG and thanks for posting it.
You know Flintrock, I know I have written about Jabberjaw in the past. Not sure if it was here on PM, or a different forum though? I have matched wits with that joker on numerous occasions and always came out on the bottom. I remember writing somewhere that if it ever did show itself that I just might give it a pass. We’ve had that much interaction, that we’re kinda like old friends ! Lol… The way it turned out, I wish I did pass on the shot. That old warrior deserved better.

But hopefully you’re correct in that the area may improve without the old alarm dog on duty.

The last three years I hunted, had one that hung out in the thick brush surrounding the jeep barn @ our camp that would bark at me every time I came in after dark. He was still barkin' the last time I put the jeep to bed a couple of years ago.
Never could coax him out of the brush.

Great Bob, BET THAT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN! Glad the new sounds are working for ya and your snow is leaving/gone. They haven't helped me down here. 9 sets last week and no call ins and only 1 vocal response with my previous sounds. 10 sets in the last 2 nights out only using Cal's with only 1 vocal response. Ce Levie. That is how it goes most of the time here.

Thanks,Mike. Uhh… No, that will not happen again! Still has me steaming that I didn’t check it sooner! Definitely a hard pill to swallow!

Cal’s sounds have really impressed me so far. But to be honest, I have been having some great call ins since I have been able to get back out. Maybe the results I’m seeing are simply due to the coyotes not being pressured much over the season? I know your coyotes have surely been pressured. Hell, your one vocal response may just be the last one in existence in your area! You actually kill the ones you shoot at, unlike me! Lol…

But seriously, I do think Cal has some excellent sounds, and they do work here in the northeast. I wish I had Jabberjaw’s pic to prove it, That’s another thing that has me steaming! It bothers me to cause pain and prolonged suffering to any animal, but the history I had with JJ makes it especially tough to deal with.

Weather has been decent for calling lately. Rain tonight and supposed to be insanely windy tomorrow. Forecast shows winds dying down towards evening, so hopefully I’ll be out after them then. Looks be like we’re back in the mid 20’s after today. Could be good? We’ll see.
