Went out last night despite the 17-20 mph winds and clear full moon sky. I stuck to the frozen water as it had a decent amount of cover and the wind worked in the areas I went to.
The coyotes were fairly quiet and inactive to start. Despite getting set up in the shadows and setting the call out further upwind, I noticed they were cautiously circling way down wind. Surprisingly, I had two come in down wind.
The first one in the video ended up dying a little too far out on the ice for my liking so I didn’t risk walking out there by myself. I didn’t catch him until he busted from winding me. I think I hit him a little lower on the front leg and misjudged the distance on the shot. He ran a long way before stopping out there.
The second one circled at about 250 yards from me a was slightly on the ice. I put him down quick. I called that one in with whitetail fawn distress. About 5 minutes later, I had another come in across the ice, basically down wind. It definitely smelled me because it stayed about 500 yards out and was moving upwind pretty good. I took a chance and ran out onto bank to close some distance. I didn’t get that shot recorded unfortunately but I stopped him on the ice at 286 yards and dropped him. I did go out to get those because I know there’s no current and the waters not deep in that bay. I’m not an ice person and don’t trust it to hold my big ass up haha.
I blanked a few more stands and was headed home when I stopped at one more spot. Moon was so damn bright so I sat down like I would during the day. The wind died down a lot and I could hear some coyotes over the hills but vocals hadn’t been very productive for me at that point. Took the opportunity to put @JTPinTX splayed pecans medium rabbit to work. After blowing the hand call for a few minutes, I had a quad racing in. Man it feels good to hand call them in.
Got the lead coyote stopped inside of 150 yards. Dropped him and hit a preset fight sound. There was female that stuck around a little too long and I dumped her too.
Decided to end the night on that high note. Shot 5 and recovered 4.
