Ice skating on a full moon

Went out last night despite the 17-20 mph winds and clear full moon sky. I stuck to the frozen water as it had a decent amount of cover and the wind worked in the areas I went to.

The coyotes were fairly quiet and inactive to start. Despite getting set up in the shadows and setting the call out further upwind, I noticed they were cautiously circling way down wind. Surprisingly, I had two come in down wind.

The first one in the video ended up dying a little too far out on the ice for my liking so I didn’t risk walking out there by myself. I didn’t catch him until he busted from winding me. I think I hit him a little lower on the front leg and misjudged the distance on the shot. He ran a long way before stopping out there.

The second one circled at about 250 yards from me a was slightly on the ice. I put him down quick. I called that one in with whitetail fawn distress. About 5 minutes later, I had another come in across the ice, basically down wind. It definitely smelled me because it stayed about 500 yards out and was moving upwind pretty good. I took a chance and ran out onto bank to close some distance. I didn’t get that shot recorded unfortunately but I stopped him on the ice at 286 yards and dropped him. I did go out to get those because I know there’s no current and the waters not deep in that bay. I’m not an ice person and don’t trust it to hold my big ass up haha.

I blanked a few more stands and was headed home when I stopped at one more spot. Moon was so damn bright so I sat down like I would during the day. The wind died down a lot and I could hear some coyotes over the hills but vocals hadn’t been very productive for me at that point. Took the opportunity to put @JTPinTX splayed pecans medium rabbit to work. After blowing the hand call for a few minutes, I had a quad racing in. Man it feels good to hand call them in.

Got the lead coyote stopped inside of 150 yards. Dropped him and hit a preset fight sound. There was female that stuck around a little too long and I dumped her too.

Decided to end the night on that high note. Shot 5 and recovered 4.

Great story! I am really glad that hand call worked out for you! It sure does feel good calling them in by hand. Honestly I rarely use my Foxpro any more. I don't have much of that spalted pecan left that I used on that call but it was really pretty stuff while I had it. I look forward to you having lots more success with it. Thanks for posting the picture up!

Yessir! It sure does sound good and looks great too.

I do most of may calling at night and like to keep things simple. Don't carry a machine at night anymore. Just a lanyard with a squeaker, a closed reed distress, and an open reed distress/mini howler. Scanner, tripod, Inforce flashlight, a few extra batteries, and a Pocket Drag. Light and fast, works for me.

You are making some long shots for a 384!
I had the feeling that was about mid range. Looking at the video it appears a bit more pixilated then it is in real time.

Maybe this is just me trying to justify my purchase and not talk myself into a 640 yet but so far I haven’t really felt handicapped by the 384. I’m still a rookie on thermal though so that statement will probably change soon enough.

I’ve made it a point to hold off on shots over 300 yards though. So far I’ve only missed a few opportunities because of that rule.

But shooting standing on the tripod is definitely a learning process. I’m not happy with my recoil management in the first part of that clip. Really trying to focus on shot process, controlling the gun better, and good trigger pulls. The other shots seemed better but that first one sucked.

But it might get REALLY expensive for you. I think your wife also likes to hunt so you might be "buying double" and paying a babysitter :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: .
Haha yep. She’s already asking about what she’s gonna be shooting. I’ll need 2 more setups for her and the kids soon. Hopefully I can convince them that the 384’s are cream of the crop even though dad has a 640 for his “bad eyes” haha.

Getting it done!!! WTG.
I've been using a 384 scanner and scope and don't think it's ever cost me a coyote. But most of our setups dictate a 300 yd. or less shot.
I am upgrading to a 640 scanner but I like my scope enough I hope I never need another one. I also don't look through 640 scopes so I'm not tempted on my weak days.

Outstanding!! I’m like you, why did I wait so long!
Great shooting and yeah, you lose some quality when downloading to another site. I can watch my videos on my phones and then look at YouTube and think what the heck?
And yeah, don’t look through a 640 scope, lol! Before I bought my thermals I looked through a 256 and thought this is awesome! Then I looked through a 384 and thought now this is so much better. Then I really screwed up and a guy let me look through his 640 on a 20% humidity night and I decided I’d just save a little more and went with a 640.
